Another Baby Clown!
« on: June 15, 2007, 05:23:49 PM »
This is a Baby Clown ARF I just completed.  The engine is a customized Space Hopper.  Killer Bee crankshaft, Tee Dee top end, Norvel head and color by Wiltze!

Hinges are the lightest Spiderwire sewn in a figure eight pattern with 3/32" spacing between stitches.  The tank is simply glued on with Goop adhesive.

My only complaint on the model design is the extreme length of the landing gear.  Since the original had no gear, the new ones could be at least 3/4" shorter.  Construction is clean and solid, weight is 6.6 ounces, a very reasonable number (my old, hand built one was 5 ounces, but used a MUCH less powerful engine)

The checkerboard is trim Moneykote red/clear check, the AMA 9246 is trim Moneykote.  Stickers applied with Windex as a cleaner/slither coat.

Arrgh!  I could NOT get that Space Hopper to run.  It has symptoms of being over compressed, and having the fuel passages plugged up.  I will investigate this week.  Very frustrating, as it ran fine on the bench a long time ago.

Key: "...a long time ago."  I'm learning, when you're ready to take one out, run it in the back yard first.

I finally got a flight in on the BC.  It has a lot of potential.  I plan to go to a backplate pressure tap to even out the run.  Also there is a mild wing warp that should be easily cured.  First flight was on 42.5' .008 lines with a Medallion .049 running the C*x black 6x3 prop (new version).  Even with the engine running a bit rich, it did a wingover quite nicely.

3/4 oz tank by Perfect, possibly now produced by Brodak.
