4 Stroke Strega
« on: January 29, 2007, 07:54:34 AM »
A number of people have asked me what 4S engine I would use on the ARF Strega.

A few have written suggesting the SAITO .72, others the Surpass .70.

I'm sure that they would both do the trick but, in my opinion, they are a bit much.

Now that I have spent time with the SAITO .62, I'm convinced that it is THE engine - a perfect filler between the .56 and .72.

Also, it has the same case/bolt pattern as the .56.

As I posted in the "engines" section, I flew a very heavy plane (77 ounces) this weekend with the .62 and it had no trouble whatsoever pulling it.

Very informative memo from Pat Johnson.  y1 y1 y1

Bob,
Here is one perspective about the Strega.  In fact from the one who
actually drew the plans for both Windy and Brodak.  That plane was
specifically designed for the ST60 and was no doubt adequate to say the
least with that engine.  I have had the Saito 56 in planes that formerly
had the ST60 and could find little difference between the two.  That was
even using a somewhat smaller venturi by far than is compared to the
stock R/C carb.  I suspect that the .62 should be totally great in the
Strega.  Possibly just about perfect.  However, that being said, the 72
and OS70 both have the capacity of swinging 14" of prop and if a person
wants buckets of torque, they will work.  I designed Shadow Cat for
David Gresens for his 72.  He turns a 14-5 wood Zinger Pro series prop,
and it flew in some pretty nasty winds last Nats with no difficulty.
The weight is a little under 70 ounces.  This and the Strega are very
close to the same size of plane, so there is a reference.
One little observation is that I felt that the four strokes performed a
little better at cooler temperatures and the difference between winter
and summer was definitely more intense between the four strokes and a
two cycle engine.
Feel free to post this memo if you like.  If anyone wants plans to
Shadow Cat, I have them available.
Pat

With a huge assist from Frank Williams today, I have shoehorned the YS FZ.63S into Strega. It is an extremely snug fit (the Saito .72 fits more easily!), and I'm still trying to visualize the plumbing arrangement to minimize component interference. One detail I have already determined with absolute certainty is that I need smaller fingers!

I intend to retain the stock throttle, with some arrangement for locking it into place at whatever power level seems appropriate. This is one very "busy" front end; there is tubing all over the place. I'll post photos when I have some results.

(Too many irons; not enough fire)

Hi, Greg - sorry but no more testing has been done.

It's just too cold here to fly.

The SAITO .62 is still in the Polaris - I have not yet acquired a Strega.
