Title: 2018 Vector ARF impressions / Issues Nitro versions
Post by: peabody on February 01, 2018, 09:32:32 AM
Hi
The primary issues I'm having with the Vector ARF appear to be that no one actually assembled one prior to kit shipment.
1) The engine compartment will NOT fil a LA 40/46 OS FP 40 without significant modification to the firewall/F!
2) The recommended fuel tank (a Nobler tank from Brodak) must be mounted about a 1/2 inch behind F1 or else the tabs for the cowl will interfere and not work
3) The spinner size has been reduced to 1 3/4", which leaves very little "meat" when a muffler cut out and needle access are made...

These issues may seem trivial to some, but mean that the airplane is NOT truly an ARF....too many modifications...

I also have an ARC Vector....I will use a 5 ounce "narrow" (1 3/4") tank and external venting.

Other than that, assembly seems straight forward...

Have fun!

Are you saying the LA40 won't fit because the backplate screws hit the firewall?  It seems to fit for me with a little gap for a spinner.

Hi Chris
I suspect different backplates or screws....bottom line: it shouldn't be that close.
Have you a spinner in mind that won't reveal a large gap?
I'm planning on Randy's
Just a little more thought and this ARF could set a new bar....as it is, the quirks need to be worked around.

Have fun!

Does your backplate have the molded remote needle valve attachment?  I took that off and will end up using a aluminum backplate. I have a regular backplate from one I replaced to aluminum on it now with the stock screws.  I don't have a spinner only a 2in, I ordered a 1 3/4 great planes. My dad asked me to build it for him and if I leave it up to him he won't put a spinner on it.

I don't see anything in the instructions about a exit hole for cooling on the cowl. What are your plans for that?

My spinner gap will be 3/32

Chris

With so much of the engine hanging out, I am going to leave to film over the hole....
I can always open it.

It looks as if mine will be 44 ounces with 3/4 oz. of tip weight....
I forget what the others that I have built (2) or assembled (2) weighed.
I did substitute the supplied gear for some that I had laying about

I epoxied everything. And added a block of wood between the engine bearers. I'm using the stock muffler too, how about you?  How did you glue yours to get a nice weight?

Epoxy.
No wheel pants (fly in grass)
Nifty Muffler
I hope to fly it this weekend

Have fun!

What is a nifty muffler?

This Vector is petty nose heavy,  was yours?

The muffler is, I believe, a Scott Dinger piece....seems as light as a chip....
Mine seems to balance about 1/2" ahead of the spar....If the wind quits, it's ready to fly and I'll know more...
Have fun!

I am going to have John inspect the issues looking at my ARC tomorrow ....then we are going to test fly the Vector ARF if the winds are friendly.

Went out with John and test flew it today....
44 ounces with 3/4 ounce tip weight /LA 46

Flew great! Probably better than any plane I have had on an initial flight!
Issue was that the slider on the adjustable lead outs is a 2.5 mm METRIC screw....sucks...
Issue is that the Great Planes spinner wasn't quite trimmed enough and had a little wobble
Issue was that the tip weight came out....I found the cover....not the lead.

I will check tightness on screws and replace the tip weight....otherwise I'm happy as if I had sense....

Issues with my scale....now showing lighter!
Will weigh it again soon....Added 1/4 ounce of tail weight and another 1/4 ounce of tip weight....flies GREAT.
Weighed it again....46 ounces, ready to add fuel

For giggles, I weighed my well worn first version ARF/LA 46......lots of glass attempting to repair gear issues
48 ounces

Not  so , I designed the  VECTOR  for a  1 3/4  inch  spinner, It has  always been 1 3/4 inch and  the  KIT  takes  a  1  3/4  inch spinner

Did you get an old one that was built different  with a  2 in spinner?

The early Vectors were for a 2" spinner (almost....metric)
Much easier for a neophyte and allows for more prop and spinner choice.
The shame is that no one actually test built one before ordering the Chinesement to build them

The early ones were a metric size that was just under  2 in, and  the early one  were  a  mistake, they were designed  to be  1  3.4
Some one  took it upon themselves to change
1 3/4  is  NOT a problem with the  Vector as  the  100s  or  1000s  of  VECTOR KITs  that have been built and used the  1 3/4 in spinner,  and  I was  under the  impression from talking to John and Dennis that Dennis  did build an Electric  Vector  ARF

Sorry but I do not  see this as  the  big problem that you seem to

Regards
Randy

Lets get recommendations for optimum engine for the new arf.
Anybody think an Evo .36 will work?
Brodak 40?
LA 46?
Others??

The B-40 will certainly work.
The LA 46 seems VERY capable.
I will use an LA 46 in my ARC as well, and am scratch building one that will use an Aero Tiger 36
Whichever power, it should be light.

Have fun!
