Sterlings Warbirds plans or kits?
« on: January 21, 2011, 10:44:50 AM »

I currently have the Sterling Begginer 1/2a Warbirds P-51 Mustang and FW-190

The p-51 my dad built over 12-13 years back and I am currently working on the FW-190

Were there anymore other warbirds? Ive seen the FOkker DVII show up on ebay now and then.

Mainly searching for plans of them. THe DVII for sure. I have the p51 and 190 so dont need those.

1/2a Profile warbirds would make for some fun combat!

Jamie, there was a P-47 Thunderbolt. This was my favorite and also the first 1/2 A I could fly inverted with. The plane flew great if the gear was removed. There was also the Spitfire. That plane flew fair and could stunt with minor tweaking. My Spitfire is primarily used for training purposes now as its fuse has split from motor mount to rudder about a dozen times. I also built the DVII which really didn't fly so well but looked cool. On hard landings the top wings would depart. I never saw one but I always felt the Eindecker would be a good flyer. Ken

Here is a list from a Sterling Models site- from the "Recent Auction Prices" page. It is great site loaded wth info and images.

I know back in the 70's I built and flew the kits with the # in BOLD font. As kids they ran around $3-5, so mow some lawns, rake some leaves, wash a few cars, deliver newspapers, birthday $$. Do whatever it took to scrape 5 bucks together, get the kit, a tube of ambroid and a dottle of AeroGloss dope and build it in a day. Fly it the next day before the dope was even fully dry, leaving fingerprints in the fuel softened finish. What a great time to be a kid.

S44 BEGINNERS ZERO $32.95

There was also a twin .049 P-38, and possibly a couple more.

I still have an ME-109 I fly on occasion, just for grins!

Both the Sterling P-38 kits (twin .049s and twin .15s) had built up wings in case anyone tries to locate them in the "Beginners Series" (plank wings).  I have both and cannot nring myself to build them! LOL!!!!

My son's first "Blasa C/L plane" was a Beginner's Zero Combo (w/Testor's .049) bought in person at AHC! LOL!!  And it still flies, so his son (my Grandson Gabe) will get to fly it before too long. ;D
