Chubby
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:40:40 PM »
Hi All,
I did post an image of this in another thread some time ago, Finally got it finished but not without a few trials and tribulations. :( It seems what I thought was the building season was actually the decorating season (Silly me), so the uncovered airframe ended up stuck in a plastic bag for a month or so. During this time various things got stuck on top of it and when I finally got back to it everything was in quite a sorry state. ???

Anyway it's just about ready to go, it ended up being Chubby in more ways than one, I had hoped for 4-5 oz but ended up with 5.5oz at 103Sq" it's a bit heavier than I'd hoped but having said that it still has about 250W/lb of power available so at least while the engine is running it should stay in the air.  y1

Now, if the wind every drops low enough and it finally stops raining over here I might even get to actually see how (if)  it flys. I could save some weight by re configuring it for indoor work (Lighter engine and less battery) but nowhere like that local to me so it will have to take it's chances against the elements.

Hopefully I will report back that it survived, if not it's been a fun project and either way will not put me off having another go at 1/2A size planes.  #^

Hi John,
I don't actually know "What" the motor is. It was a no name (Unbranded) cheapo motor. (Although I think it's actually a "TowerPro"). 22g 7a 2-3S Lipo 2050kv. The KV is a bit high for 3 cells but I had planned on running it with a 6*3 on 2 cells but the prop was way too big for the model so I went down to a 5*3 and upped the cell count to 3. The whole set up was built out of my scrap box and the motor and battery came in at £12 including shipping. So just under $20 plus the ESC (CC Phoenix 10) and a JMP2 Timer which I already had.

I don't have any great hopes for it but I'm going to try to get it through the OTS schedule but in truth if it will do loops, lazy 8's and fly inverted I'll be over the moon.  #^

It looks as if you'll have enough power. I have used the Towerpro 2408 and 2409 motors. They are larger, 13a and 22a max,  but are very good for the price. The shafts bend easily, luckily they are easy to replace. Hope you get good weather soon.

Hi Larry,
Well, it was actually a Bislob originally. It was not the Microwave which shrunk it. It was the spin cycle in the washing machine that did it.  LL~ LL~

Hi John,
Re: Shaft bending.. So I guess the secret is not to crash it  (Like that's going to happen)... Oh well. at least it's small enough to be left in the car ready to go, it has 5C charge lipos so I can get it ready to go in the time it takes to sort the lines out. A guy down the club built one some time ago. Apparently they are actually quite aerobatic but they do not Bunt. So I have been warned.....

Any idea what size lines I should fly it on? I've got some 10lb  Spiderwire ad was thinking of 20ft to start and adjust as necessary.

Yah, the shafts don't bend if you don't hit the ground, However towerpros will bend with the slightest contact.

I fly my half A's on 10 lb test and I have never had a problem, usually I use  35' to start with, sometimes moving up to 42' .

I must ask, what is a bunt?

Hi John,
It's an outside loop (Possibly an English translation. I sometimes forget we are separated by a common language).  HB~>

Often wondered about that. If you look the word up in the dictionary it is hard to figure out that it means an outside loop. Seems to me if it will do an inside it should do an outside loop, albeit it might be a bit looser.
