Title: top wing military plane
Post by: Duke.Johnson on January 10, 2013, 03:03:06 PM
I want to build a 1/2A carrier plane.  I would like to have a top wing and would prefer a built up wing.  I'd also like to put a .049 TD in it.

Any ideas? Kits? Or Drawings?

Duke,
Take a look at the Curtiss XF-13. There was a 15 size published  for carrier, but no 1/2A that I know of.

Here is another design. Again this is a 15, but it could be reduced in size

I'm no carrier historian, but I'd be surprised if an O1-E never landed and launched from a carrier, might not count as an Arressted landing, but I bet a couple of plane wranglers grabbed it beore it came to a stp!

Sorry I missed your reply.  I don't know how I missed it.  Thanks for your help.  I need to get back to this project.  I've been working on a .15 carrier.

Duke,
You have gotten me interested in this idea. I've started a plan for the XF-13, see attached

PS I am thinking of an AP .061 for power

I have a proto type started, a 1/2A Skyray that a won in a raffle.  I'm waiting on a Cox backplate, should have it done by next weekend.

Duke,
good choice. SIG started an unofficial carrier event for their 35 skyway over  20 years ago so why not a 1/2a version. The event is still flown today.

I finished the plan, well as far as I'll take it, some detail is missing. There are two version, one tiled and one full. If you get back to the XF-13 they may be of use. I would also recommend the Melvin Schutte article in MA June 1990 for a 15 profile version. You can access it on the AMA site.

Unless you are more of a purist than I am, you might consider a take-off on the kit Dumas A-7 of the early 1970s. That was a Standard Profile size model, with a slightly anhedral shoulder wing.  The McDonnell (?) A-7 was the 'SLUF' (Short Little Ugly F.. er.. Feller) during the Viet Nam years.

Yes, a carrier jet, but with a radome nose that looked a lot like a spinner. The 35 Profile flew well.

Lou,
Another good jet candidate is the A-6,a bit more mid wing but....

I picked up a new thunder tiger .070 yesterday at the swap meet.  Do you think it would work well in the xf-13?

To Bill Heher, an O1-E landed on the USS Midway with a Vietnamese pilot and family on board during the fall of Saigon. I think it was pushed overboard to make room for more planes but there is a Bird Dog on the Midway in San Diego.

Too big for 1/2A in the states.  1/2A is up to .051.   I think the European Countries limit is .099.

. . . 1/2A is up to .051 . . .

Actually, the upper limit for 1/2A is .049.  In the USA, .051 falls into Class A.

Mike, Doc,

The definitions of 1/2A vary, in 1/2A profile scale it is .061, in RC it is often up to .10

On the XF-13, I think the .07 would be fine. I have one but haven't run it yet, looks good though.

Well maybe I'll put a TD.049 in the XF-13 and save the TT .070 for a stunt plane.  That will have to be another thread.

Nice thing about the .07 is throttle, very necessary for the carrier pattern. What throttle do you have for the TD

Looks good, I'll be interested in how well it works. I assume it would also fit a Medallion.

Well, proof of concept.  The 1/2A carrier flies!  (PE**)  The boys walked out to the field and put in about a dozen fights on it before dinner. It's not the best but it's a start.

Glad to hear  it is working for ya.   Just lke a stunt plane it will just take practice and tweaking.

Duke,
Sounds good. Keep at it, maybe the kids will give you a turn.
