I had to miss the show, but the model was demo’ed there by Mike Alurac, John Wright and Bob Harness.

The ceiling was lower than we estimated, so vertical and high maneuvers were out! Oops!  HB~>

It currently uses 350 2s packs, but they can drop to 200 2s for shorter flights on shorter lines. They were only flying 1 minute flights, so it was 4x over capacity! That could save 1/2 ounce!

Next version will be better balanced and more out-thrust. Possibly large tip plates too.

IMHO, not a bad first try!  y1

A work in progress!  :D

I finally had a chance to fly the plane with the revised control setup and light battery.  Very nice, but I really find flying a fast model indoors to be very disorienting, especially if you need to keep it under the ceiling beams!

 VD~

I have drawn up and printed out the patterns for Mk 2. I probably won't work on it until after VSC.  The one I have will do for the next indoor show at the Orange County Fairgrounds. I don't expect performance improvements, just better structure at the same weight.  y1

after having flown one of Igor Burgers indoor Gee Bee with his regulator, consider that as an improvement.

They fly slowly in level flight and the accelerometer add power for any vertical.  They fly so slowly that stunt doesn't seem possible, but a full pattern is very easy. and level flight is a brisk jog.  It makes the compressed indoor circle very manageable once you get used to the very low line tension and control feedback.

All true for competition, but boring as a show model. Kids like speed.

true enough, but on short lines, high speed is real hard to fly.  The nice thing about his regulator, is you operate in any mode you wish.  They do hover well like a bi slob, can do crazy stunts.

Anyone interested in the plans? Cheap to make, fun to fly, what’s not to like?

I am interested.  The local Community College has a Friday evening indoor flying class, and I've been wanting to check it out.

Larry, if you got some printed or drawn, you can bring some to VSC for me. If not already printed, email would be neat.
Thanks!

Here is a PDF of the parts for the Gymnast.  I have changed the fuselage structure from the original.

The fuselage has a ¼” thick foam center and 2mm Depron sides. The wing and tail parts are all thin Depron. The nose ply is 1/64” thick.

Motor is a Suppo BL1504, currently it flies on a 2S 180 mAh battery. Prop is a GWS 6x3.

I cut out the wing and cover it with Mylar, then add the reinforcers top and bottom.

The control surfaces are simply hinged with Scotch tape.

So, anyone going to build one? Or two and fly indoor combat. That would wow the crowds.  y1

Of course you would have to choriograph the flights so you have something left to fly later. But the kids don’t have to know that.  ;D

Steve Shiff and Steve Sobel used to put on beautiful dual stunt routines. Makes a great show. One plane decorated like CocaCola, the other like 7-Up.  H^^

It is great to get the kids going roundy round, but then we need to show them the potential in CL Flying.  >:D

What is incredibly stupid is that no RC club has stepped up with a buddy box and Vapor to train the kids in RC. As slow as the Vapor flies, I can’t imagine crashing one if the training pilot isn’t asleep. At the EAA show at Compton Airport, they do outdoor RC flight training in addition to our CL training. Why not at the AMA Expos?

Yes, I am being disloyal to CL! But flying models is flying models, and we are running out of youngsters. Get ‘em any way you can. After all, how much CL hardware we use is dependant on the RC fliers? Fuel, props, balsa, dope, covering? You think we support this stuff? Can I get some of what you are smoking?
