Title: Synthetic oil recommended for Cox engines.

Thumbing through some year or so old UK magazines and I came upon an article describing the reed valve Coxes. There was a list of the customised offerings from Cox International. This is why I never read the article first time round.......who is interested in plain reedies given fancy paint jobs?
But wait, there is a firm recommendation to run your reedies on synthetic oil........save yourself the sight of those filthy reedies with baked on castor!
Is the gentleman talking heresy or is there some mileage in his suggestion? Me? I will stick to castor, unless anyone knows better.

Sounds like heresy to me, but the Cox top end seems pretty bullet proof -- perhaps if you put enough of the oil in there to keep the bottom end happy, you'll keep the top end happy, too.

I don't think I'm going to stop adding castor to my 1/2-A fuel, though.

I like a 50/50 mix.  Castor for protection, Synthetic to keep the bore free of varnish.

What synthetic oil do you use, and where can it be purchased?  I'm going to start mixing my own fuel for the Cox Babe-Bee series engines.  I'm planning to use 25% oil (50/50 castor and synthetic), 35% nitro, balance methanol.

Dave, I suggest Klotz Super Techniplate. That is their synthetic with 20% castor added. Use it at 20% total (results in 15% synthetic and 5% castor).

Where are you purchasing the nitromethane?   I cannot find a source around here........ Somewhere in Raleigh?
