Sterling beginner series 1/2A planes (templates trade)
« on: August 03, 2024, 08:07:26 PM »
I have the Sterling Ringmaster Bipe S-32, the fokker D-7 S-41, and the Shoestring S-38. They are new unbuilt in the box. I would be willing to make templates of the parts if anyone has any other planes in that series that they would be willing to trade. I also have a Thunderjet S-35 (30 yrs old wrecked and in pieces) that I plan on making templates and building a new one for my grandson. I'm not interested in buying vintage kits, I would like to trade templates of other Sterling planes in this 1/2A profile series. I am looking for a zero S-44, Hellcat S-42, Spitfire S-34, focke-wulf S-43, Thunderbolt S-39, Messerschmitt S45, Eindecker S37, Mustang S-31 and  a 1/2 A profile p-40 ( I think it was a Midwest kit) Thanks Mac

I  built several of the planes you mentioned and I discovered very few had maneuvering capabilities. Surprisingly the Ringmaster Bipe with gear is quite maneuverable. In addition to that comment so is the Thunderbolt as it taught me how to fly inverted. The Spitfire is also capable. The Thunderbolt and the Spitfire fly remarkably better without their gear. The Shoestring was the worst of the bunch and in my experience was hardly capable of looping unless fully overhead which you worked up to.

I still own my Thunderbolt and for nostalgia I received a new in the plastic version from
Sterling's designer and draftsman  Bob Clauss. I've had many of this stuff on a shelf and it really is time for it to go. I loved them but It's looking like clutter to the max. I think I could possibly make some templates from the Thunderbolt. I know I have a Messerschmitt but I'm quite certain it's a Midwest kit. I also have the trike geared P-63 from Midwest which was a fairly good flyer. I always wanted the Eindecker but that one was never popular at the hobby shops where I bought them. I had the Sterling Mustang and it was a formidable flyer but I can't locate it. I know mine was the earlier version as it had the two piece aluminum motor mount vs. the nylon.

Juan is a member on Stunthangar who lives in Puerto Rico. He has a real knack for this stuff and he loves all of it. He's provided templates of some of these kits. Juan is a master at what he does with this stuff. I hope he sees this post and can offer up some information. He's also a regular poster on the Cox Engine Forum. Ken

Hey Kenneth, I enjoyed your input, Thanks!......It seems like only yesterday looking through my local hobby shop in Northwest Indiana. It was the early 70's and control line flying seemed to be in full swing! I was the youngest members of a fantastic flying club, that I joined with my uncle. Sure there were guys that flew RC, but at that time I remember things being very different. While in the club I flew FF, CL, sail planes ( basically anything that would be made of balsa and would fly!). I think it was the engines that really fascinated me. Before joining the clyb, My Dad bought me the Cox ready to fly Fokker from JC Penney. Which I had no success flying whatsoever! After it was in too many pieces to salvage,  I used the cox 049 from it and set out to build a kit. I ended up with a profile p-40 (sheet balsa wing) I remember as a kid being intimidated by a built-up wing, so avoided the kits with built -up wings. I built several of the Sterling Beginners series models before the Carl Goldberg shoestring stunter, using Carl Goldbergs "Symmet-Tru wing construction method. In the 90's, after a break from building and flying, I was 10 years into a career in the Navy. At that time I purchased some new radio gear fron Americas Hobby Center in New york. I have a Grandson that is 8, and Im trying to get him interested in bulding and flying. I thought some of these profile/sheet basa beginner series would be a great starting point for him and tons of great old memories for me. Im semi-retired at this point and have been working part time at my local hobby shop. Was cool to hear from you Kenneth! Any templates (any  company) you could scrounge up would be put to good use!....feel free to contact me in the future.

Mr. Doug,
For 1/2A you need to jump on CoxEngineForum.com

You'll find a guy named Duane, who supplied Outerzone with 1/2A Midwest plans/patterns.

Good luck with your quest.

This is just to what your whistle. And if you are a sucker for old Scientific kits CEF has a few build logs too. Then there is also Dave Cowell of DPC Models...Dave cuts great kits! NFI, but I've gotten several from him (some build work on CEF):

I think the Cox Clone PT-19 kit maker is here somewhere. He also posts on the faces of book site. His kit looks really quite remarkable. This may be up you alley given it is a flat wing kit with built-up fuselage. Here is his eBay ad:

Sorry for the mis-direct.

Check out: dpcmodels.homestead.com.

This is a one man show operation out of Albuquerque selling short
kits of 1/2A and rubber power planes. I've bought several items and
they are first rate and very reasonable.
