Smallest 1/2A ish wheels for grass?
« on: January 26, 2022, 03:20:36 PM »
I'm getting ready to build a Flat Winger fun ship for an OS 10 that I have. Ship will be based on the Aussie Yardstick model and scaled to around 34" span. I'm thinking of some tricycle gear and was wondering what wheel size has been used successfully from smooth grass (we fly of trimmed Soccer fields). I was considering 1' - 1 1/4" ish maybe a little bit fat?

Mr. Dennis,

I can't recommend any wheel size for 1/2A on grass. I can recommend getting door mats, rubber mats, cardboard, or corrugated  sign plastic for a runway. At least the take-off goes well enough. However, the landing always looks like a gymnast performing floor-tumbling at the Olympics.

I keep 6 pieces of rubber diamond plate about 1/8" thick by 2 feet wide and 3.5 feet long for my "on-grass" runway stored in the trunk of the car.

I know...not what you were looking for. But it is an option.

If you go tricycle gear,  1 1/2 nose wheel with 1 1/4 main wheels.  But the previous post has best results. H^^

In my opinion, landing gear, 1/2A, and grass should not be used in the same sentence.  Get a ramp and use smaller wheels if you must.
