Title: SkySport Mk 2 finished
Post by: Larry Renger on November 19, 2009, 08:45:02 AM
I just finished the latest version of the SkySport.  The main LG have been moved to the fuselage, and the nose lengthened for better balance.  Here are pix.  The kit is available from RSM Distribution.

Definitely a different 1/2a plane.

Half a is really one of my favorite categories. Must go back to when I was a kid and was actually able to fly it on my own with no help from Dad!

What are the projections on the fuse sides for? They look nice but I have no clue what they are for.
They are a little too forward for a battery pocket in an electric conversion.  :)

I noticed that too. If you look at the second pic you can see that it is open. My guess is for a plastic bag or baloon tank. Larry?

I thought it was just for symmetry--to match the tank on the outboard size. Could be wrong of course!

I would have to agree with Mr. Hahn on the symmetry.
I personally think that many of the modern designs are lacking somewhat in character simply from our lack of giving them a little window dressing. Mr. Moffatt asks what they are for as though they had to have a functional purpose to be there. This is why we are in the design state we are in. For the sake of clean lines, weight savings and simplicity, if it doesn't 'do' something it doesn't belong. While this is indeed worthy of consideration, we tend to make up the difference in panel lines and other graphics.

I am all for adding scoops, cheek cowls, louvers, and other sorts of blisters or what not just to give the plane some character.  I have been toying with the idea of mimicking some of the design traights that made some of our cars so good looking. Do you remember the time when you could tell exactly what make model and even the year from two blocks away? Can't do that anymore folks.

I do like this plane!

The cheek cowls form a box for a balloon tank.  It is epoxy coated inside just in case of leaks.  It goes all the way through the fuselage so I can hold about an ounce of fuel (all that is needed to fly a full pattern with the AP Wasp on 47'lines).

SkySport 1 took 3rd in 1cc at the recent Mackey contest, and its best score at the contest beat all the Advanced flyers.  In fact every one of the 1cc planes flew higher scores than the best of the Advanced pilots.   %^@  My best score for the day was 454 points.

Sky Sport 1 has trophied in every contest entered, twice earning trophies for more than one person.

Please do a search on "balloon tank".   It has been discussed at length complete with assembly photos.

Flight reports!

Flew a couple of flights at the Valley Circle Burners fun fly a couple of weeks ago (Holiday doings and the flu have prevented more testing).

The balance and sensitivity seem to be on the money.  VERY smooth in level flight, but plenty of kick for squares.

I have a warp in the left wing that needs to be removed, and need some added tipweight.

As far as basic design, I think I blew it on the nosegear as it tends to bounce and bounce some more unless you hit it perfectly.  The last model had the nosegear straight down and was a dream to land; almost couldn't go wrong.  This one has the nosegear raked back.  An easy fix with a pair of pliers but I have to prove it out before releasing the MK 2 design to RSM.  Hope to get that all worked out this weekend.

That is one slick looking balloon tank "clavo", but it sure seems to be a fuel spray catcher that would spell major fuel soaking deterioration after some run time on a very slick looking ship.

Interior is thoroughly epoxy coated.  No problems with the MK 1 plane that is 4 years old.
