Wasp is dead, long live the Wasp!
« on: February 28, 2012, 11:04:42 PM »
Eric Rule, a licensed vendor of Global Hobbies products has gotten the final word on the doom of the Wasp .061.  They WILL no longer be produced and sold by Global.

However!!! Eric has convinced them to do a final run of the engines just for him!  But, he needs a minimum of 30 pre-orders before he can justify springing the up-front money to get it done.

Guys, this is the best small engine ever in my book. And I worked for Cox. I have 14 of them, since I decided I didn't EVER want to run out.  And no, I am not selling ANY of mine.

Contact Eric at rsmdistribution.com to place your order.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

For those of you who don't live in the US, Conrad Electronics UK is still selling the Wasp for £27.99. I have just ordered two, so that I am covered for my future needs.
Those of you in the US, please support Eric Rule and order from him. I have given up buying anything from the US, because of the 20% tax levied on the goods and postage and the final straw is the huge sliding scale charge that the Royal Mail make for collecting the tax. How they can justify a sliding scale when it costs them the same to collect £1 or £1000, I just don't know!

Regards,

Andrew.

I have my name on the list for one if Eric gets enough people signed-up to make an order.

Now that he is on the forum, perhaps Eric will state a deadline for pre-orders.  My suspicion is that the time is short before Global refuses to go through with an order and the tooling and production line are in the scrap heap.   :'(

Hi Larry,
Can you tell me if Global own AP? I was under the impression they were just the importer / distributer in the US. I am just hoping that the latter is true and this means that we can still get them here in Europe.

Andrew.

The A is the first letter of the name of the designer, the P is for Paul Bender who owns Global.  Sorry, it is proprietary.

Hello Larry,
Thanks for the information on who "owns" the Wasp. Whenever I have seen them listed over here, they are always lumped in with ASP engines, so I assumed that is who makes them. I didn't realise that it was owned by Global. Just as a matter of interest, does Global own ASP as well? Or do they contract the AP engines out to ASP? Just interested in how the set up works!
Conrad still have the Wasp for sale, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy some more. They are still a bargain even at the price I am paying.

Regards,

Andrew.

I don't have the inside information, but suspect that ASP is the actual producer of the AP engines.

Hello Larry,
Just noticed that one of our large retailers has the Wasp included in the Magnum listings, even calls it the Manum 0.61!

Hello All,
I decided to do a trawl of the UK sellers who still stock the Wasp. There are quite a few and they only charge a pound or two more than Conrad in Germany. Made a few phone calls to various suppliers and they all have plenty in stock. Looks as though the  Wasp is going to be available over this side of the pond for a goodly time!
Interesting, that depending on who sells them, they are referred to as an AP Wasp, ASP Wasp, Super Custom Wasp and Magnum Wasp!!!!!! The mind boggles! I knew that ASP and Super Custom "share" the same factory in China (same company I am told). Super Custom are probably another name for the same thing. Mind you Magnum is Taiwanese, so quite what is happening, I don't know! Maybe the AP Wasp is dead, but the others might just continue! The Chinese are no respecters of copyright.

Regards,

Andrew.

Looks like a final run of the AP .061 is really unlikely as Eric only has interest (including mine) for 3 engines so far, which bites cause I'd love to have two of them, maybe three.  Anyone want to sell a couple?

James

i ordered 2 of them and they landed at my house 3 days later that was two weeks ago.  RSM is a quick shipper. Last weekend i ran 6 oz of fuel through one of them and then put up 3 flights with it in a ringmaster 207.

Hello James,
A great pity that it looks like a final run for RSM is unlikely. If that turns out to be the case, then you can still get them from UK or Germany. There seem to be plenty this side of the pond, but they are a lot more expensive than the US. Prices run from $41 to $50 each, plus shipping and import duty! I may be coming to the US this year and a friend of mine lives in both the US and UK. If you get desperate and Eric is out of stock, I am sure that I could get a couple to you as hand luggage, so you only have the US postage to pay! Hope the US customs don't read that!

Regards,

Andrew.
