Title: Shinden Rehab

Back in Aug 1982, MA published a plan for a Profile Rubber Scale Shinden. I couldn’t resist so I made a 1/2A CL version. The model has flown on and off ever since with a Cox Baby Bee powering it. Recently I decided to rehab it with an electric motor. It doesn’t look quite as nice with all those wire and things hanging on, but if it flies OK I’ll Clean that up.
The proper name for the Shinden is  Kyushu J7W1 Shinden ( "Magnificent Lightning"). It was a late WWII Japanese development that did not fly very well. Years after I built the model I ran across an Article in MB, which said the design needed some positive incidence if the fore plane. The Japanese and I both used 0-0 incidence and the flight problems I have had are very similar to the real plane. If I ever build another I'll put in some incidence.
I hope to get some flights in this weekend to see how I like it as an electric.
The power setup is;
Turnigy 2300-1700Kv motor
Volcano 12 ESC
Either 2 or 3 s 350-500mah Battery
U/Tronic Controller for throttle operation
EFlite timer for WOT operation.

I remember that article.

What did you do for balance after you put that honkin' big motor on the back of that light balsa assembly?

Neato!  Does it stunt at all or does it need the incidence fix first?

Tim,

What Picture are you wanting?  Perhaps you missed the attached PDF file which has 4 shots of the model.
Balance with the glow motor required a lot of lead, with the electric the model is actually about 2oz lighter since I can use the battery to adjust the CG.

The model is not really a stunter, small wing, all sheet type. I think it can do be sloppy loops but I never had the courage to try. One reason to make it electric is that I can easier rig a throttle

Yes, I did miss the attached file.  Is that a solder splash on the left wing, or did you have a bird helping out with your paint?

The Shinden flies about the same with electric power as it did with glow. It is very hard to get the nose up, even with moving the cg back. I think it really needs some incidence. A little surgery is needed, should be ready by next weekend.
