Thanks Jim. I had some relatively uninterrupted building time today.

Finishing always slows me down.

Tank is a little Perfect 1/4oz held with hooks and a rubber band.

I made a bellcrank mount from 1/16" ply scraps. Spacers are 1/4" dowel drilled through. Sterling nylon belcrank from my stash.

Struts are 3x1mm carbon rod. I put a line guide on, but need to re-do it- angle is not right. Little pockets from 3/32" to give something to stick the covering to and bond the struts to.

I made the pushrod and guide per the plan.

All the hardware added a whopping 2 grams

I tried a recently learned trick. The inner ribs were cut by tracing an piece of paint stick with the rib pattern glued to it. The wing tip ribs were traced/cut around a tongue depressor with that pattern also glued on. Both cutting templates has their edges hardened with a couple of applications of CA. While it took fifteen minutes per template, I then cut the balsa ribs in about forty minutes.

Maybe I'll catch up before Mr. Jeremy's first flight...

That's always a good method on a Hershey bar wing !

I spent most of the past week sick with the flu. In spite of that, I managed to cover my wings and tail with tissue. First time doing that process in about 20 years, so I'm not proud of the results.

I'll spray the fuse black this week and some stripes on the top wing this week if the weather cooperates.

A few more coats of dope and you should be OK.

Mine always look baggy three coats from the end.

After getting through two bouts of the flu, I finally have my little Queen Bee ready for final assembly.

I used my airbrush to shoot the black on the fuse and the stripes on the wing. The frisket I used on the wing did not stick terribly well, but I got the job done.

I'm envious...I just cut my LE/TE and slotted them. I already cut the fuselage and did the same with a canopy. The plan is to go with Lil Stinker colors and pattern similar to yours, Jeremy.

I see that Jeremy will use TD .020 power for some extra scoot. I’ve got on hand the regular Pee Wee with tiny tank. Bench testing it tonight, ‘’twas tricky to find a good needle setting for starting. After finally starting, it seems unlikely to have enough fuel to complete the pattern. Ha! Next run I’ll time it and let you know.

From what I saw of The Queen Bee article, doing the AMA Stunt Pattern was not the goal.

It was more of a BiSlob type act using 1/3 of a circle while being flown from a stage.

I finished mine today. I've got a bit of a "packaging" problem to work out. My tank is so close to the wing that it's near impossible to fuel.

It finished out at 2ozs even. I'll be happy with some loops and maybe a figure 8

I popped out the top vent and bent a forward facing vent and installed it.

Sweet looking model and a nice mod to the tank! I’ve been running in my Pee Wee today. Finally and after 15 full tanks, I’m getting a steady run at a minute and a half in length.

Any idea how long your TD will run on the 1/4 ounce?

I have a handful of TD’s, this was the cleanest. I screwed it to my test stand this afternoon and got roughly a 1 1/2 min run from it. Starts easily - I built myself a little half-a starter. It jumps to life with just a bump.

Starting it on the QB, and launching this thing is now sounding even more interesting.

With four or five of us dabbling and building these Queens, is there any interest in my placing a batch order from Cox International for sets of landing gear? I have to launch from a stooge so that’s why I modified Larry’s design with landing gear (see post #21 above). Will need LG on my current build. The plastic LG takes some modification work and a set of wheels on your part.

If there’s interest, I’ll place the order and mail the LG to you.

Had a bad day at the field... my son and I went to the schoolyard to do the maiden on the Queen bee.

Before going, I realized my son was not really up for a hand launch. To that end, I took an idea from this thread and made some quick landing gear that clamps between the motor and the mount. I even had some tiny wheels that are just right for it.

When we got to the field, I fueled it up and gave it it a whirl at starting. First bump with the starter and the tail sheered right off 😞 . Poor wood selection I guess.

At home, I repaired the break, then glued on a 3mm x .5mm carbon rod from the nose to the tail. This stiffened the fuse right up.

Beautiful finished product! Yup, convincing others to hand launch a CL plane is difficult. I’ll most likely copy your landing gear setup. Thanks.

What a bummer, losing the tail! That TD has a lot of snort. And I agree - the 3/32” balsa isn’t robust. Noticed this when cutting out the fuse this eve. Or did you lose the vertical stab?

Slow but steady. Yes, the balsa fuselage is tacked over the plan with a copy glue-stuck to the balsa. This is pinned to the cubicle wall so I can work a piece a day.
I'm not too sure I like the strut wire between the wings and may go with a plywood N strut on each wing tip. I'll attach wingtips once I know how I'm bracing both wings together.
The tail feathers and engine mount still need to be cut too.

Finally got the little Queen Bee out for a flight today. And fly she did.

Before I get into the bird, a fun note. My buddy Lester helped me launch. He was a friend of Larry Scarinzi and was excited when he heard this was one of his designs.

Performance is excellent. Run time is great on the little 1/4oz tank with the TD.020. Line tension with 10lbs 25ft Spectra lines is perfect for a calm day.

She's a real stinker to get fueled, but after a few mins futzing with a clogged needle, we had her starting nicely.

Flying, she loops inside and out beautifully and does a horizontal 8 very nicely. Inverted flight was no issue at all. Lands about like a set of car keys when the engine quits.

I flew two flights today as the sun was going down and then it was time to roll up the lines. My son shot a quick vid of the last flight. He caught a flat 8 right as the engine went sour and I flew the rest of the flight with the saggy engine.

I'm super happy with the little bird.

Regarding the brass tube, I used concave portion of a screwdriver handle that fit the tubing perfectly as a mandrel to bend the tubing around. Kinda like the old Harry Higley tool that I can no longer find.

Hi Guys,
Time flies more than my model airplanes. I'm about ready to cover my QB. I've been doing this build on coffee breaks at work. I hope to fly it some time this summer. I decided to add a few small spars to minimize swag between the ribs. I also plan to use Popsicle/Craft sticks as wing bracing. I expect the plane to be sturdy, especially as I tend to fly alone and over concrete. There is no intent to do soft-prangs into grass. I'm thinking I'll do the red-white "sun-rays" and scallops of the Lil Stinker, which is why mine has a canopy.

Things to do:
Make controls
Make fuel tank
Cover airframe.

Since this is a coffee-break-at-work build, I am considering drifting away from my typical "thinned-dope" stick-down of DocSpan.

I read the SLC thread, and am tempted to glue-stick the tissue, and cover with FredV4-gifted DocuLam. That leads to looking for clarification from the forum, please.

Is there a particular glue-stick I need?
Do I iron the tissue onto the glue?
How do I iron the SLC in the swag between the ribs?

Finally, a few "here are the bones."

With 1/2A's and .020's, Step One is to confirm that you have at least two good engines before going any farther. These were cheap products made 60 years ago.

Of the several biplanes I've built I have always covered and painted the wings before final assembly.
