Electrified 1/2A Pathfinder
« on: September 17, 2009, 01:57:28 PM »
Am posting here for any 1/2A flyers who might be curious, but will also post in the Electric forum and invite any/all interested to check in to the discussion there

From the Brodak kit.  A very good build, excellent die cutting except for some of the plywood.  I converted to Taildragger because I thought i might be a simdgen lighter and simpler.  Weighs 14.5 oz RTF.  Intend to fly it wtih a 6x4 prop to abide by the famous "Renkar rule" and also that keeps it in the spirit of 1/2A. Will fly on .008 x 52' lines, hopefully Saturday - wish me luck!

I would be interested in any feedback from you experienced PF-flyers: how fast do you fly? How long does it take to complete a pattern?  I am sure I will have enough power, but am uncertain if I will have enough duration...

52' lines might be pushing it.
Mine weights 13oz with a Norvell .061.
I fly it on .008 x 48' lines, laps around 4.8 I would guess, never timed it.
I would think mine could handle 50' lines max.
Maybe you can go longer with the extra weight if you have the power to match.
Notice anything unusual in first picture.

Yours has built up tail feathers where Dennis has solid tail feathers.

Allan:
What Clancy said and what Jim M said.

My best guess is that your bellcrank to flap link is on the BOTTOM of the flap, then the slave rod is on the top???

Yep that's it.  But it wasnt intentional.  I just made a mistake during wing construction [loss track of top / bottom] and this is what I had to do to resolve it.  I have fun with this at the field when I show it to someone new,  most people dont see it till I point it out.

Looks like it doesn't need a pushrod guide either.

UPDATE
2nd time out with the PF yesterday and I can pronounce it a success!  Had to go to a larger battery, 3S x 1600 mah and also switched to a 7x5 pusher prop.  Flying on .008 x 50' I have great tension everywhere and completed 2 patterns on it.

The bird is incredibly stable and easy to fly, and produces lightning corners.  Currently flying at about 4.25 lap times, could probably stand to slow it down a tad, to maybe 4.4 or so.

BTW this is the prototype of a new turn-key Brodak power system targeting .05 to .10 applications - I think people will like this one too...

Hello Dennis, Dennis here too!   H^^

Head over to the "All Amped Up" forum - there are a couple more Dennis' there too.  There is a thread at the top call "List your set-ups" and I put everything in there.  The power system is a prototype of a system Brodak will soon be selling as a complete "turn-key" system.  If you can wait a little while (January?) you will be able to duplicate my set-up in one stop.

I think the PF is a great building and great flying airplane - no matter how you power it.  In fact I am hoping to fly mine in some Profile class contests next year!

Watched the short video.  Plane looks like it might be a little fast, but, that could be me.  I am not going to mention the errors I could see. LL~ LL~  Will go check it out as I think electric might get the kids flying again.

Hey Doc, gimme a break! that flight was the first pattern.  I slowed it a little for the second flight and put in all the requistie laps - flew it a little better too.  Need to slow it down a little more and I think it will be OK.

Flying real time it feels like the square corners are instantaneous; but then you see them on video and realize just how rounded the corners really are.
