I was cleaning up some stuff and came across a 1/2A-1/2AR Tarno-Carb with motor mount. Not being a 1/2 A enthuseist I have no idea about this. It say's made in Canada and the installation info has a date of May 23 1978.  any info will be helpful since I'll probobly sell but would like to know what I have. TIA

Hi Lee,

Evidently it is a carb used on the Tarno line of engines, but I have never seen one as far as I know.

The Tarno carbs were made in 2 versions for the TD and the reed valve engines . The one shown is the reed valve version. They were well made with a slip clutch throttle and they did work well on engines that were designed for throttle application. They didn't work well on the Coxes straight out of the box and generally required a little pressure to make them work.Muffler pressure preferably. I don't think that they were ever big sellers. All of mine got sold to a gentleman over in Norway a few years ago.

I believe they were popular over this side of the pond twenty or so years back. they were used as a radio controlled throttle on Mills diesel engines. Didn't seem to work all that well, they gave normal rpm and a reduced rpm without much in between.

That is what my Tarno carb is mounted to.   Tee Dee .049 on a model air boat.  It was built for one of my daughters years ago.  It is sitting in the bed room with the transmitter in the shop.  Need to get it down and dusted, then try running again.  Yes, the carb will not get down to non moving idle speed.  But, it does slow down. H^^

To a collector or a user? LL~ LL~  As a user I would get an engine already set up for throttle control.  Dependng on the time of the month the collector may empty his pocket book for one. H^^

Hello Leester,
   Had a closer look at the Tarno carb on a Mills 0.75. By sheer luck the Tarno has the same thread as that on the Mills 0.75 diesels. So that was why they were popular on this side of the pond! I must admit that I would much prefer the simple R/C carb (the one based on the product engine intake) for a Cox, or even the exhaust restrictor type. Now for a Mills 0.75 they are probably the best around.
  As to value, they were sold here for a few pounds twenty plus years ago, but that is of little help in valuing them today. I don't think they are particularly rare and I have seen the odd one or two at swapmeets that went for between £5 and £10 pounds, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are that cheap (or expensive, depending on point of view). I wouldn't mind one for a Mills 0.75 Tomboy I have, but I will leave the price to you as I am perhaps prejudiced!
