Hardware for beam mounted 1cc models?
« on: February 17, 2019, 04:49:15 PM »
Gents-

What is everyone using to mount their little I/C demons to their planes?

I measured up the lug holes of a Cox Medallion .049 and the Norvel .061 (much larger).
It seems that at least in the Norvel, a 2-56 machine screw gets lost in the hole (like what I told my ex wife, "It's like throwing a hot dog down a hallway!"), and yet a 3mm or 4-40 is too big for the Norvels.
Looks like a 3-48 would be perfect for either though, but....
Another pretty substantial issue is that blind nuts seem lightly available for 2-56, and completely non-existent for 3-48 or 2.5mm. Blind nut aren't easily available until 4-40 or 3mm. I DID find some blind nuts in MPJet's catalog for 2.5mm, that might be an option....

What are folks using? Anyone have a source for the 3-48 blind nuts??

Thanks in advance!!

Target

Funny you ask that. While a bit different, I am not having any luck finding six(6) 3-48 cap screws to use in rebuilding an engine. However, I did find 3-48 blind nuts. Du-Bro makes them. One of my LHS has them. But there is no 3-48 machine screws.....

Chancey- AWESOME!!

Wish they were in bulk, but what the heck at least available!!

I have always had the best luck on fasteners (in general) with McMaster Carr….
Have you looked there?
91251A096 is the part number for 1/2" long, they have every length from 1/8" to 1".....

RTL and Micro both have 2-56 T-nuts.  I'm not sure which of the two I bought mine from, but I'd trust either of them.  I think 2-56 would be plenty strong.

I tried, and a 4-40 would fit through the holes of a Norvel Big Mig 049.  It was snug, though -- there'd be no room for messing up the holes in the crutch, and I really don't like the idea of chewing that much wood out of a 1/4" square bearer.  I suspect they're designed for 2.5mm -- for which I can't find T-nuts.

I think I'd use 2-56 nuts, and figure out a way of positioning the engine that didn't depend on the screws.  Or I'd order up some M2.5 hardware, and just use regular nuts on the back side.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Micro fasteners and RTL both sell 3-48 socket screws in a bunch of lengths. Washers, t nuts and  regular and safety nuts the smaller packages are quantities of 50 and they are reasonably priced
Micro fasteners list  3/16, 1/4 3/8 1/2 and 3/4
Go on line and type in the  supplier closest to you and you will be able to get almost any size  bolt, nut or washer t-nut up to 1/4 and 6mm

additionally they sell 5-40 screws for the Cox engines and 3 mm for the Norvels prop nuts

Micro fasteners and RTL dont have 3-48 t nuts. If either of them does, PLEASE post the part number, i really want to buy some!
In fact, no place has them that i can find.

The Dubro #134 item mentioned is no longer listed in their catalog, and it appears they assigned that number to a red spinner, lol.
Thats not a good sign, but i did send them an email incase they have some hidden somewhere.

I hate to say it, but 3-48 T-nuts appear on the 'Bay from time to time. I bought a few bags from a vendor when had several. They will be recycled when the model no longer flies.

Since that is an orphaned size, I find myself using 2-56 in their place during construction. My Mosquito with twin Big Mig .074s uses 2-56 all over...engines, tanks, landing gear straps. I do use a thread locker (blue) on engine hardware and landing gear.

I wish I could buy a bag of 100 3-48!

I am wondering if by any chance that the SKU number listed is that of their own, and not a Dubro part number? Just a thought. However, I will not be going there anytime soon that I see, but if I will be in the area, I can check it out and pick some up if interested. I would know a day or two in advance so I could give you a heads up.

If you actually find a source for 3-48 blind nuts, please let me know.

No, I contacted Dubro, and that IS the correct Dubro part number. But they said that they no longer "make" the 3-48 hardware and have none in stock any longer. That's a dead end.

I did by a couple cards of the Dubro #134 off Ebay in a lot, as Jim mentioned. And your source has (2) cards of the t nuts, but the shipping turned me off from buying them there. You should buy the two they have left if the shipping is reasonable....
