The Army Scout is finally Available. PIC'S ADDED
« on: February 02, 2010, 08:48:54 AM »
The newest model from Black Hawk Models is the Army Scout and it will be featured in the American Flyer beginners set. The Army Scout has a 18" wing span with a 3/8" airfoil. It encompasses two ideas 1.- Make it simple. This kit has the fewest parts and is the easiest model to assemble. 2.- Good flying with the COX Sure Start engine. While any radial mount engine will work fine we included an adapter to fit the Sure Start engine. I have seen the prototype of this kit fly at over 60 mph and do a very fast stunt pattern.
The American Flyer is a set with the Army Scout kit, Cox Sure Start engine, Cox Safety tip Prop, Brodak metal fuel tank, fuel tubing, Perfect 1/2A glow clip, control handle, control lines, Sig wheels and complete hardware. This makes an excellent gift. The Army Scout is only $25.00 and the American Flyer is $50.00.
These kits are available at a few dealers now, if you are interested let me know and I will have a dealer contact you.
By the way the Army Scout is being kid tested at a school in California, we donated 20 of them and are waiting to see how it goes. Three of the American Flyer kits will be donated to some kids in Brazil next week.

Brodak's 3/8 to 1/2 ounce stunt tank. It cements to the side of the fuselage and a 1/4" hole is drilled in the wing to allow refueling. Keep it simple.  n1

Reminds me of the Scientific American Boy.  Is the leading edge as blunt as the pictures look?

The American Boy was the base that we started from. Knowing that it is a terrific flier we set about improving the design. The Rudder was made into a one piece unit and set atop of the fuselage, to ease building for the novice. The elevator then was straightened out and allowed more freedom of movement ala Ringmaster. The American boy's wing sets into a slot with wing braces under it, we slotted the wing instead witch allowed the added wing braces to be eliminated and the motor mount braces, really small triangles on the American Boy, to be enlarged to 3/4" triangles. The elimination of the wing braces allowed us to attach the remote fuel tank to the fuselage. The engine dictated the use of a spacer to fit the choke tube but the plans includes the use of other engines without the spacer. The use of that engine also forced us to move the landing gear behind the spacer and motor mount. Wanting to eliminate the use of a separate tail skid we built one in.
The wing is a 3/8" thick tapered, flat bottom wing. The leading edge is slightly rounder in the kit but the thickness depends on how much sandpaper you use. This is the same wing used in the American Boy.
The extended landing gear is used to get the plane into the air quickly as long taxi runs are bad for the novice and lead to ground loops.
We found that the flight caractor of this model is very much like that of the American Boy, maybe a little better.
