New Build - Lone Wolf (pics)
« on: February 16, 2008, 06:15:15 AM »

Now that the waterfowl season is over, its time to get back flying.  As you guys probably remember, I had some planes stolen but were recovered albeit destroyed.  Been working on and off on this since the end of January and just finished it up.

32" span roughly 200 sq.  8.6 oz with a .061 AP Wasp.  My 7 year old came up with the name when he saw the final product this morning.  Said Cool Dad, looks like an NC State (my alma mater) plane.

Did some new things on this one.  LE and TE are a 3/4" strip of 1/8" balsa, backed by a 1/8" dia carbon fiber rod, stitched and CA'd into place .  Made for a very stiff light wing.  Doubled up on the landing gear wire to stiffen it for the first half.  Wheels are heavy, but at 8.6 oz I should have MORE than enough power with the .061.

Gas tank is the old Norvel style.  I removed the pressure release and filled the hole with hot glue.  Pulled the back plate off, cleaned the crud from the factory out and reglued it in place.  Also removed the straight pickup tube and installed one that bends to the outside and bottom.  Have run it on a sheet wing and get great draws and no pressure issues.

Just came in from flying in the circle out in front of the house.  Has been very windy today, but calmed down just enought to get a flight in before dinner.  Man that plane is fast!  Still way too windy to try anything other than moderately level flight (still bouncing all over the place in the wind), but it flies great!  Was flying witha 6X3 Cox, and it took off almost vertical in about 18"   %^@ .  Could have been that it was going into the wind, but man that was quick.  Got 3/4 of a lap in after the 12 cc tank burned out and most of that was into the wind.  Hit harder than I wanted, but control without power in wind is difficult.  Will post more when I get a chance to fly in calmer air.

Now to build another one for my other .061 so I can have a "Wolfpack"!

hi John,

Looks like it will be a blast to fly when you get it sorted out. ;D

As to the Wolkpack reference, I can't hold you totally responsible.  My youngest son played some ball up there, but I played in Chapel Hill (Blue Heaven!) and my wife graduated from Nursing School at UNC-CH, so it is a mixed emotion! LOL!!

Good Luck, and have fun.
