Nelson Hobby paints
« on: November 10, 2010, 03:43:33 PM »
I tried to contact Jerry Nelson today to freshen up my supply of Nelson paints. I've used these paints for the past 5 years and had very good success with this product. For those who never used it, its a water based polyurethane with little or no smell and water clean up. The paints themselves when used with the crosslinker withstands high nitro fuels up to 40% spilled directly on it. I found that all the phone lines have been taken out of service. I then found a post from Jerry that the business has been shut down since the 3rd of November with no more orders being filled. Jerry stated that due to his age and some recent medical procedures and the lack of sales, he's out of business and wants to find a perspective buyer. I know I will surely miss this product if its not going to be made available again. This truly made my 1/2 A hobby enjoyable as I could paint inside and not have to worry about fuels attacking dope finishes. I do hope someone takes this business over. Ken

I had posted about Rustolem a couple weeks ago and you had replied and told me about Nelson paints.  I tried to contact him back then and never did get a reply.  Nelson paint really souded like the perfect paint to suit my needs, wish I would of gotten the chance to try them out.  I am currently doing a test with some acrylic paint that I got at a craft store and will try to coat it with Minwax to make it fuel proof.

I may be wrong but I think that the Nelson Paints were based on the SYSTEM THREE brand of polyurethane paints.

http://www.systemthree.com/store/pc/WR-LPU-Topcoat-c29.htm

I have used the Nelson paints and really like them for ease of use, and I love the water thinner and cleanup.  With the "crosslinker" they are basically fuelproof and are also tougher than he** to sand after setting or if you want to change or repair the paint.

I checked out the System 3 link and do agree that it is probably the same as Nelson Hobbies Paint.  Their color card is not very broad so I sent the following inquiry:
I have a question on the WR-LPU paints.  Do you have pigments available for end users to custom mix colors?  If so what is the smallest package size that they come in?  I am interested in using them for Radio Control and Control Line model airplanes.  Apparently Jerry Nelson of Nelson Hobbies has closed his doors and I believe he was repackaging your product to the model aircraft industries.
Thank you.

I got the following reply:
You can add commercially available universal pigments up to about 8 fluid ounces per gallon.
Looks like one can order their paint and custom mix your colors.
Now if we can just find the pigments...
It's only paranoia if they aren't really after you.

Hi David, I'm responding to your post and quote above.

Universal pigments will mix with water-based, oil-based and lacquer-based coatings.
The really good news is that they are easy to obtain.
These are the pigments that are in all of the pigment dispensing machines in all the paint and DIY stores.
I have been using these pigments for years to color my dope and with black, white, red, blue and yellow, I can cook up any color I need for my scale models.
Take some small bottles (I use 2 oz dope bottles) to your paint store and have them squirt what you need into them. This stuff is concentrated  S?P so it doesn't take much to do the job.
Since they usually don't sell pigments this way, they may seem reluctant to help you so throw yourself on their mercy and tell them what you need it for and they will usually figure out what to charge you; you may even get it for free #^ if you have just purchased all the paint you need for the house!
