Title: Musciano models by Len & Naomi
Post by: Naomi Macklem on March 14, 2019, 10:20:14 AM: We had a local Musciano building contest for the Balsa Beavers Model Flying Club, and here are some pics of the models Len & I built for the event.
Len came in 2nd with his red Golden Hawk

Rob Pringle won the event with a unique airplane, but I don't have a photo or the name of his jet style model.

Ms Naomi, I need you to talk with my wife about flying her own. I wish mine would share the hobby with me.
Oh, and pretty planes...both of them! They look like Black Hawk Models kits. BadBill is trying to sell a BHM Built-up wing stunt plane right now. It would be a good step up from these logs.

So now we have YellowJacket and his wife, and then Mr and Mrs. Macklem...any other husband/wife teams out there? I need to show mine this can be a hobby for spouses.

Our models were scratch built from a full-size outline supplied to us by Chris Brownhill (Balsa Beavers Club President). Len & I work together as a team in building, decorating and flying. Between the Balsa Beavers and the Bean Field Flyers (Len & I belong to both), we have a lot of very supportive spouses. Spouses don't have to enjoy flying to enjoy being at the flying circle and being part of contests and fun flying!

By the way, Len's last name is Bourel not Macklem. I didn't change my last name after we got married.

I helped him get it started, but it didn't fly. Given the design, I wasn't surprised. The inboard-only elevator did what you would expect it to do.
I'm surprised the the full size version flew at all.

Post by: Dave Hull on March 26, 2019, 06:43:14 PM: Cool airplanes, all. Beautiful finishes. But no reason the Cutlass shouldn't fly. I flew a batmobile last year built by Dave Braun. I had serious doubts it would fly--it clearly had been seriously broken and glued back together--but fly it did!

PS--There weren't any really good jet fighters in that first generation. The original engine for the Cutlass was gutless.... The real shame was that one of my most favorite airplanes of all time, the X-3 Stiletto, was forced to resort to those same J34's because the later, bigger, allegedly better J46's never materialized.... Now, if someone has an X-3 hollow log, I want to see it!

Post by: Scott Richlen on June 18, 2019, 06:52:18 AM: I built the F7U for our Musciano contests years ago. Put an OK Cub .049 on the front end. I flew it in our speed event and the OK engine happened to be a screamer. I won!

Your perception of the effectiveness of the single elevator (or whatever they are called on a flying wing) is correct. It mostly keeps it in level flight. But a wing-over? Forget it! It wouldn't even do a steep climb. I was careful not to put it into any dive as I doubted that it would be able to recover.

But, boy, did it scream around the circle!
