Musciano Atomic X measurements Please.
« on: September 10, 2019, 01:53:08 PM »
I have always liked the Scientific Atomic X
for it's 1950's "Fallout" vibe.
I know it doesn't have the best reputation
for flying ability but that's just rumors.

I have a copy of the kit instructions and
I think I could build a reasonable replica if
I had a few basic dimensions.

Please, please, please, I would like to know

- The wingspan

- Root chord, ( plank width, also flap root width )

- Log length, width and depth

- Stabilizer span and root chord

I promise to draw actual plans and post them here,.

Any help or info  would be very much appreciated.

Cheers! - K.

That's my "Atomic" in your picture, built around 1959. If Dennis has not sent you the measurements, I can go downstairs and measure it for you. It was from the kit, and I doubt that I sanded too much into the original dimensions. - SK

Thanks Serge !

  I hope you don't mind that I
re-posted your picture.
Nice looking plane !

  Thanks for the offer.
Dennis hasn't sent me anything yet
but please hold off  measuring
your plane. I intend to make a
new dimensioned drawing
but I have run out of time until
winter.

K; I sent you a email with full size drawings showing all the info you need to build the Atomic. Perhaps the Internet monster ate it? Anyway, I'll send it again immediately after posting this reply.

K, please check your Email Junk / Spam folder. The Email I sent you  didn't bounce back to me so it could be there?

Dennis. YES ! it was in my spam can.

This is exactly what I need.
Obviously someone in the distant past
took the time to draw actual plans for
the Atomic.

   The Balsa Beaver's Anniversary event
was today. It is mostly a racing and combat
contest but a Musciano "contest" was tacked
on after the real flying was over. The wind
is too strong for Muscianos so it was held over.

Now I have time to make an accurate Atomic .

Many thanks Dennis and Serge. I will find time
to draw the Atomic for general consumption.

Cheers! - K.

Hi, Gooz.
I just found this thread and was wondering how your Atomic project came out.
I built one in the late 50s and really don't remember much about it.

Around 15 years ago, the NVCL started the Musciano Hollow Log contest so I built another Atomic.
It weighed 5.1 ounces and really flew well.
Power was a Sky Fury 049.
Fully detailed cockpit.
I'll have to fire it up and fly it again.

Beautiful craftsmanship and finish, Robert, that is a sharp looking jewel you have there. With all that wing area, must have some improved stuntability over some of the other hollow logs. Noticed the 3 red LED's and miniature capacitor or resistor behind the pilot's head, are the LED's functional?

I built Walt's stand way off scale Grumman F6F Hellcat built up and with plastic turtle deck and silkspan covered wings back in 1965; built the short wing 12" Li'l Bipe, Cessna 180 and rebuilt my brother's Li'l Devil hollow logs in the late 1960's; Sizzlin' Liz P-51 Mustang built up and Messerschmitt ME-109 hollow log in the mid 1970's. Still have an unbuilt Scientific Piper Super Cruiser hollow log in my kit cache.

They were all sport fliers at best but were certainly a lot of fun for an adolescent and later young man.

Hello Mr. Z!

Sorry that I didn't see your reply sooner Bob.
Here's a picture of my Atomic.
Not as pretty as yours but I like the
"Chrome Dome" silver on a plane called
Atomic.

I managed three flights before the cooties
shut everything down.
The Atomic flies amazingly well for a
totally "stock" Musciano.
  Loops and lazy eights
using 40' Spectra lines and a good
Black Widow running 10% Ritche's Brew.

Cheers! - K.

That is a neat looking little plane.   Scientific kits were the thing for us on low budgets and a Cub 049.  If I could have seen the future I would have stocked up on each and every one of the Scientific kits.  Where's the plans for the Atomic? H^^

Hey Doc,

I know I promised to draw Atomic plans.
The program I use didn't want to work with
Windows 10 and I got lazy.
If you really want them, I'll brew some
coffee and keep my promise.

I can Email the Atomic plan to anyone who wants it. Just send me your Email address so I can attach the plan with my reply. The original plan doesn't show the wing, stab or top view layout full size. However, I will include the full size patterns.
