Title: Light lines!
Post by: Robert McHam on June 22, 2009, 06:46:18 PM
Today I picked up some new line material!
It's Spiderwire EZ Braid 10 lb test. Boy is this stuff tiny and light.
I think I will like this stuff. The only drawback I see so far is the color. It is moss green. Should disappear easily in the grass!
I have heard other drawbacks such as being abrasive. Maybe ceramic guides?  LL~ Seriously, if that were to become an issue for leadouts one could maybe use a couple of those tiny glass beads. In the arts and crafts world they are called "seed beads".
This same  abrasiveness could hurt the lines themselves when they twist. Don't have a thought about that yet.

I haven't noticed any problem with abrasiveness, either against LO guides or between the lines themselves.  I've been using the stuff for several years now.  I think it's a non-issue.  (MO)

I am pretty sure it is Kevlar lines that are abrasive.  I have never had a problem with Spiderwire.

Spiderwire has a braid that is the same as the original braid but has a Teflon type coating on it to help with guides on fishing rods. It keeps wear down and increases casting distance. It's called Spiderwire Stealth. Funny thing when I bought mine 3-4 years ago it was cheaper than original Spiderwire... go figure, same stuff but better, and cheaper!

Oh, by the way, 10lb is 2lb diameter. 50lb is 10lb diameter.

Can you use Spider Wire at an AMA contest?

Check your AMA rule book at the AMA site.   Just google AMA or Academy of Model Aeronautics.  For sport flying and you have good home owners insurance it might be okay.  DOC Holliday

Phil C (sorry can't spell his last name, big in combat planes) posted a while back that the AMA has approved a "super line" for competition. Can't remember what class they approved it for. Sorry Phil about the name thing.

Probably Combat as that is Phil Cartier's main interest.  Check out the Corehouse site some time.  DOC Holliday
