SkyStreak Forward Swept Flying Wing
« on: December 18, 2010, 10:27:35 PM »
This is the third in a series that started more or less as a joke.  I won a Brodak Baby Lightning Streak kit at our Christmas raffle many moons ago.  It looked boring, so I turned it into the Frite Streak (1st photo).

Well that worked out really well, so I did the 2nd one, again with Cox reed power.  I took it up from about 150 sq.in. to 180 sq.in., improved the construction and actually reduced the weight slightly.  I won 1cc stunt at Woodland one year with that one! Dang, we're onto something here.

So, let's get serious about this.  I designed the SkyStreak 250, and that is what is currently ready to cover -TOMORROW!  Power is to be the AP Wasp swinging an APC 5.5x2.5 prop.  Lines will be around 45 feet.  Projected weight- under 9 ounces!  #^  The cheek cowls are the balloon tank compartment.  Trike gear, adjustable leadouts and tipweight box complete the picture.  I intend to fly this in cc competition.

Number 1 is hanging in my garage, and I use it in demos at places where we do flight training.  Number 2 is somewhere in Eric Rule's labyrinth.

I am really looking forward to number 3!

My fascination with forward sweep began with Larry Scarinzi's Streak model as published in Model Airplane News.  It looked incredibly cool!  So I built a simpler version of my own design.  Mind you, I was all of 15 at the time.  Over the years, I have built several versions, but all had straight leading edges.  The ones in the photos are the only ones where I bit the bullet and did a full forward sweep.  The sweep turns out to provide really good pitch dampening, while also eliminating tip stalling.  These puppies TURN HARD and then STOP where you aim them.  What's not to like?  Hmm. maybe a .15 size one?
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Very Cool...I had a Sportwing 'way back in the 60s, with a Greenhead Torp .23 on it, that vaguely resembles your Frite Streaks.  Fun to fly, though I don't remember a lot about its performance level...probably ahead of mine at the time.

Larry, what is the brass sleeve on the front of your Black Widow, behind the prop, 2nd picture?

Could that be brass nose weight Ray? I always pondered in doing something like that or even making a brass spinner for nose weight. Ken

Harry Higley has a nose weight for Cox 049's.  The Dmeco Sportwing, if built light, is capable of flying a recognizable OTS pattern.  There have been photos of a larger airplane, OTS legal, similar in concept to the Frite Streak. Anyone know anything about it?  Sorry to hijack, and I like the Frite Streak idea.

The brass thing is a Cox noseweight that was used on the Rivets model.

Don Butman had a highly competitive forward swept flying wing back in the late '40s. Here is a photo of him with his "Leprechaun" fleet.  He still has a big model of the flying wing tucked away, though I don't have a photo of it.

Yes the Streak.  powered by and Atwood Shriek.  It was my inspiration for many forward swept wings I have built since I was about 15.  I have the entire article and plans as a .pdf and the original article.
