For the last few years I thought that I knew what it took to get kids into the hobby and I was angry when I would see adults chasing kids away.  mw~
I was wrong!  I looked at a couple of kids who did everything I thought was needed but they still did not sign-up?  :-\
I then remembered a couple of years ago when a couple of kids flew an old beat-up plane and my shop was full of kids wanting to learn how to fly - so what made the difference?
AHA! If you haven't figured it out watch for the next issue of "HALF A FLYER" magazine and I will explain the whole thing.

Sounds good to me but my 10 year old seems to like the fox 35 powerd Cosmic wind over some of the other smaller planes .
He is still learning and only has a few solos with some help.
But he keeps asking about one of thoes Bill Osborne platters.  ~^

Good for him, I truly hope that he sticks with it.  We need many more fliers in this hobby.  I hope that you are letting him into the building too.

I try to keep him involved and get hands on with the planes and slot cars and soap box derby.  three hobbies that kids do not know about unless parents do it with them.  The guy's at FMP are a great help as well.

I think the albatross around our neck is engine noise.  Years ago, when I fired up an engine, the dinosaurs would move out of the circle ;D, and the kids would come running.  In recent years kids have told me engine noise is ugly and they don't like it.  For a soccer mom, who knows nothing about model aviation, an engine sounds really dangerous.  This is particularly true for 1/2A engines, or any high revving unmuffled engine.  So, I think there will not be an upsurge of interest until electric becomes the norm.  People are used to dealing with electricity and don't have fear of the unknown, as they do with 049 engines. My 14 year old daughter is finally ready to put the first coats of dope on a Skyray that was started 3 -4 years ago.  Maybe this will make the bug bite.  Hope so since it would mean I have a pal in the shop.

Yep,

For my kids I know the noise was intimidating. I actually put asside the little 1/2As for my super clown. It's just easier...
But, after spending the summer flying the super clown with a fox .35, my kids are enjoying the sport. My son is 11 and my daughter is 8.
I think the problem is they have MUCH MUCH more to stimulate them than we had in the 60s and 70s! n~

Video games, RC planes sold at walmarts for rediculus prices and now electric race cars and 4x4s to name a few...

I'm personally going to hang on to the IC engine as long as I can. Electric just doesn't appeal to me...but that's just me. H^^ H^^
