Title: I DO FLY!
Post by: LARRY RICE on April 14, 2009, 07:14:25 PM
Many of you are aware that I have had 3 strokes and that has interrupted my control line and R/C flying, that and the medication that I am on. I do want to set the record straight, I do still fly models. The big event is the 4th of July. We make up between 30 and 40 tethered model kits and set up a building table at the local park. I walk about flying one of the models and giving away the kits, then the kids can go over to the building table and build and color their kits. One of the volunteers will help them with the build and teach them how to fly the model. This is a lot of fun and I look forward to it.

Larry you are an inspiration for us all.  I want to thank you for you dedication in reaching out to kids ( even us grey haired ones!) an giving them a taste of the fun a box of balsa and some glue can provide.

One of these days I'll get back to work on my BlackHawk SE-5 kit and post a picture - it should have been done a year or more ago- but I left it in Utah while on a job there and the guy who was lookinh after it moved and put it in storage! I will see him next week and prod him to go retreive it for me.

It is not what I put in, it is what I get out of it. A few years ago I was assisting giving control line flying lessons to a line of youngsters when I stopped to watch the newest pilot getting ready to take off. The pilot looked so serious, determined to do well, as he took off, he had his back to me but when he completed the first lap he had the biggest smile you could imagine.
Then a couple of years ago I was helping at a Boys and Girls Club program where the kids were building rockets. Out of all of the confussion you could see the pride in being able to build something themselves.
So, you see....it is not what I am putting in.....it is what I am getting out.

Larry,

The smile on that little girl's face says it all...
