The "BIG" model that started all the madness
« on: February 08, 2011, 01:19:59 PM »
HI All,

This is the kit with the "BIG 27" WINGSPAN" that got me hooked.  I had actually gotten the Cox P-51B Mantz Racer to fly but but it didn't last REAL long! LOL!!  The local hardware store stocked stuff for us and he had this kit.  I had saved enough money to get it and a small bottle of Testors OD and another of Sky Blue.  I was SO PROUD of it when I finished, you wouldn't believe it!  A trike gear made take offs and landings easier and it would really "fly".  Loops, inverted and lazy 8's!  I found out quick that the Babe Bee wouldn't fly long inverted.............. ;D

I found this one and I am going to build it and fly it once again.  12 years old all over again! LOL!!

You don't think Scientific was digging at all the plastic RTF models do ya?  "Balsa flies BETTER"

Hey Bill,
Loan me the plans either before or after the build and I'll look into doing a CAD drawing for the airplane. y1

Hi Pat,

I will shoot you out a set ASAP.  But PM me your addy.  (of course I might find it on your Vendor's Corner.........)  A member here actually had a copy of the plans before I found a kit, I was going to scratch build it! LOL!!  There was also, at least, a matching P-40.

The cowling and a couple other parts are vacuformed, and it has a clear canopy.  Of course, all can be substituted for with balsa.

Gail's *almost* to the point that I can get back to the basement! ;D

Thanks, Pat
P. S. Great news about Gail, sounds like her recovery is going as well as can be expected. It must be the excellent care she is getting, the prayers don't hurt either. y1

Bill,

There were several models in that series.  I have the plans for a Spitfire and had a copy of the P-51.  Black Hawk Models currently produces the P-40 and Hawker Hurricane from the series with some modifications as we were unable to make the vacuum formed parts.

Thanks, Larry!  I never knew of the P-51 and that is my all time favorite airplane! LOL!!

I will have to go to your site and check out the P-40 and Hurricane.  I have always had a thing for the Hurricane, too.

I know that you know how to vacuform.  What was the problem?

Here are the two models that we currently produce.  The builder of the Hurricane left the landing gear off on his model and we have changed the decals on the P-40 to the U. S. wing insignias with the tiger/shark mouth.

Knowing how to vacuum form is not a lot of help if you do not have a vacuum former.  Last year we produced 5 kits per day 365 days - no days off, so hand forming is out of the question.  All of our current formed items are done by outside companies but next week a vacuum former arrives and I will be training a new employee how to use it and make plugs for it.

I remember (approx 1963) a much larger wingspan than typical Scientific profile/built-up wing Focke Wulf 190 for .049 power. Was that also part of this series? It was a very agile flyer as I recall.

Hi Victor,

Good question!  I could only remember the King Cobra (which I had of course) and the P-40 off the top of my head.  Larry Rice reminded me of the Hurricane, which I am going to have to build now. ;D

Maybe Larry Rice, or one of the other Musciano experts will know!  Will be interesting to find out.

Even today, these models are a LOT of fun.  And we can find 1/2A engines that are a little bit stronger than what we had as kids. y1

I am sorry but no the Focke wulf 190 was not in this group.  It's kit number was 134 and it had an 18" wing span.  I was one of another series that included #129 Grumman Wildcat and #131 Hawker Typhoon.

Larger plane list:
#111 Bonzo
#112 Hawk
#114 Mustang
#115 Spitfire
#116 Cessna 170
#117 King Cobra

On both list there some kits omitted because I do not have the time to look all of the numbers.  There were also several designs that Walt made that were not Produced by Scientific and he has sent us several of those designs which we will be offering in the future.
