Removing norvel crank
« on: December 24, 2014, 04:12:40 AM »
How do I remove the crankshaft from a norvel .049? Do install a screw in the prop shaft hole snd drive it out with a hammer like a cox?

Thank you,
 Jim

If I remember right, its just like the AP wasp.  Remove the piston sleeve, nosecone, and the backplate.  The piston will slip off the crankshaft and it can slide out the back

The shaft is friction locked by a conical collet. You generally do have to break it loose with a hammer tap.

I put a screw into the crank, then use my drill press as an arbor press to press out the crank.  Close the drill chuck down all the way and press on the head of the screw, motor off of course.

Thanks guys,
I picked up a used norvel that still feels gummy after soaking in fuel. Hopefully I can clean up whatever is in there once I have it apart.

Good catch, Jim, your Tee Dees are going to be jealous. Make sure the piston pin can't slide out of either side of the piston. If it does it's easy enough to fix with a piece of music wire and a hammer. Lol, sounds kind of scary. I wrote a thread on how to do it somewhere, here or CEF.
