Hollow logs/Super stuntmaster
« on: October 17, 2009, 02:02:16 PM »
I'm putting together a super stuntmaster. I only have the fuse. ,stab., elevator and a set of plans. My question is, plans show a cowl, problem is the back plate of a baby bee is exactly the diameter of fuse. Also have a mount for an Ame 049 that is also same size. Any ideas on how this is supposed to be accomplished.  Thanks  John

That is easy to answer. Typically Scientific made the 1/8" ply front bulkhead (many of us call it the firewall) about 1/8" wider on each side, top and bottom. The cowl was usually a thin sheet of aluminum wrapped around the top and sides with the bottom open. The bottom opening is pretty much impossible to see in the artist renderings on the box or instruction sheet.

In the case of this particular model, the top of the bulkhead is even with the top of the fuselage but 1/8" wider on each side, maybe even 3/16". The bottom appears to be 1/8" to 3/16" more as well. These pictures should help.

Plane is finally going together. Thanks to help with plans and answers from several people. I decided to change landing gear mount. I cut a channel for each leg and a hole for top of gear into balsa. Then i inserted a piece of light ply into top of hole. Next i made cowl with plywood firewall, and epoxied it all together. This way engine doesn't hold gear in place. Thanks for all the info John

Well done John!

Now who would not be proud to take this to the field?
What does she weigh?
