We need a good source of glowhead gaskets. It would be especially helpful if they were available in several thicknesses so we could do away with multiple gaskets and the risk of distortion and leakage. Anyone out there good at making punch press tooling?
-
I can make punch press tooling but with copper being so expensive these days and with all of the waste the process produces, along with the cost of making the tooling, these gaskets would be pricey.

Aluminum works just fine, and drink can stock is definitely adequate gasket material. I'll drink the beer, you punch the gaskets LL~

Larry,
last year (I think) I tried to find a source for head gaskets. The only place that responded to my emails was in the US in the Ohio or Indiannia region if memory serves. Quoted price (for 500 pieces I think) was reasonable but being in Canada the exchange and import duties would have driven the price per piece to an unacceptable point.
I will look for the details when I get home and pass on what I had (providing I find it). As another thought Bernin (XENALOOK on eBay) seems to ramping up production of old Cox bits and pieces and may be doing the same (or at least thinking about) for the head gaskets. Might be worth sending him and email on the subject and see if he has any plans.
I have a large number of Norvel gaskets so I am set for some time but when the need arises I make up a simple punch and make my own as I have done for the Norvel 074 and a few other very old engines.

That is where I have been getting the head shims as well as the cylinder shims. Go to their site and there is a lot of stuff there. DOC Holliday

I should have known aluminum would be fine to use. Can't tell you how many spark plugs I have sold that came with the aluminum squish ring seal! Installed a few myself in my '63 Falcon.

I looked over hill and dale, over there and yonder but to no avail - I just couldn't find the previous work and details I had.
A quick google search did turn up quite a few leads - all in the US. Have a look a on Thomas net (I think that is what it is called) and you will soon find someplace that would be willing make up several thousand.
On the other hand, you have a small lathe. Don't need a punch, just make up a mandrel and turn a bunch. If you haven't a clue as to what I am suggesting, there is an online bit with some details that was written by Doug Galbreath on fixing up the GZ 049 that you can find here:

Lee Machine Shop, which advertises here, sells a gasket cutter.
