Mini Force Part Deux, Cold Steel and Bling (pics)
« on: May 02, 2008, 07:56:46 PM »
Well, the Mini Force has been resurrected (sort of).  Same wheels, same elevator and rudder, same trailing edge, and parts of the same engine.  But now she got some BLING yo!  Jus need me some 22's and she'd be kicking  ;D

Oh yeah, and I found out that a Dubro 1 1/2" spinner will work on a AP .061.  Removed the bushing and inserted it (note backwards) into the spinner backing.  Works like a champ.

But in all seriousness, finished this up today.  Heavier than I wanted (just under 10 oz), stupid $cote is a lot heavier than the Insta Cote I used on the original.  Could not find anymore of that Insta cote, I liked it too, a lot easier to use and cooler temps with the iron.

Well I have 6 flights on the new Mini Force, flies just like the old one, GREAT!  Holds a line like its on a rail, powers through loops witha 6x3 APC (although I prefer a 6 x3.5 Master Airscrew that I dug up somewhere), and glides FOREVER after the motor kicks out.  Regardless of where I am on the circle, I can whip it enough to bring it in for a perfect landing at the starting spot on my "runway".

Not sure, but may need to add a little more tipweight, got a nickel in the soda top weightbox (thanks again Minnesota Modeller), may add a dime.  Right now it seems to fly level, but my planes seem to last longer if my outside wing is dropping just a hair.  Keeps them from rolling on me in outside manuevers.

Same engine, sort of.  I had 2 AP .061 wasps, one was a screamer an one was kinda tempermental.  The engine casing around the venturi on the screamer cracked when I ran it into the ground and the needle dug in.  So I took the shaft, piston, head, and backing off the screamer and put it into the tempermental one.  Voila, another screamer.

Just came in from the court again.  Tried some back to back wingovers and  fig 8's with great success, then something cool happened.  Neighbor down the road came up the street with a box.  Said he'd been watching me for several weeks having a ball and wanted to join in.  In the box was a Testors P51 that was his sons! (always wanted one of those).  Asked if he could fly a few laps and after we got her cranked up he put in a few level flights before falling down from being dizzy.  Said it'd been 35 years since he flew.

Pretty fun evening in general.

Thanks Ray,

I'd have to say mine resembles yours, The Skywriter was around long before the Mini Force, plus I took a lot of notes from your in depth build log on that plane.  I skeletonized (is that a word?) the fuse from the TE back to the tail, used your idea for a wing tip box (top of a soda bottle, I love this!) and you and I both used the wingtip appearance of the Primary Force.

One thing I did do on this plane was stick build the rudder and elevator which really helped me on the weight.  I think it made them stiffer too.

I still stuck with the idea of no center spar on the wing, including a carbon fiber rod on the leading edge instead secured by CA and thread.  Rib spacing is just over 2.75" of 1/16" balsa.

Front of the plane has 1/16" ply doublers on both sides of the fuse for my inevitable nose first crashes.

Hey John,

I appreciate the compliment! We "borrow" from each other, re: the "droopy diamond" airfoil among others.  That's one aspect of this forum (and others) I love.  It presents a real education in methods/designs/innovations/etc.

"Nose first crashes"...right.  Seems to me it would take special skill to crash any other way? Unless you were flying a Bi-Slob or something...just a little joshing.

Yeah you know, a nose first pile drive like I did last night as opposed to a loose line wingfirst roll in, or an inverted whoops, theres the ground scraping.

Man, I MURDERED the Part Deux last night.  Was a beautiful evening for flying, no wind, awesome runs on the engine.  Was doing back t back wingovers, no issues, single fig 8's some inverted, having a ball.  Then I got cocky and went to do 3 fig 8's back to back.  No idea what happend, on the inside loop of the 3rd 8, it just went straight in.  Nosecone gone, fuse busted in 2, wings sheared clean off, even broke the elevator (didn't break the prop though).  Going to post a pic of the remains when I get a chance, it was something to see.

Ive always heard that a good stunt ship should disentegrate in a crash, so I guess this was a good one. n~

That was a lesson I had a hard time learning...used to build very heavy trying to make planes crash-proof.  Finally figured out if you build'em light you don't crash nearly so often!

Sorry to hear of the Deux's demise.  Can you rebuild it?

I may be able to salvage some parts of it, but it'll not be very much, probably better to just build another.

Its been my experience that major structural damage is better to completely replace as opposed to repair.  I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow when I'm at my home office and post them up so you can see what I'm talking about.

That's what I love about half-A.  Kill one plane , just build another. Usually less than a week.

HMMM --- I'd say three sticks of chewing gum, about two feet of duct tape, and a few staples oughta have it up and going in a few hours.

Ouch! That's painful even to look at.  Did you crash it on concrete, and if so how's the engine?  I cracked a Norvel case once (patched it with JB Weld, still going strong).

Yep concrete.  I'm pretty sure I have another cracked venturi casing, but not really looked at it yet.   2 really good planes gone in a month and at least on engine so I'm gonna step back a while so the wife does not kill me for messing up her kitchen again on another build  >:D

You also need to find a grass circle. Much more forgiving.

yeah, I know, but the circle in front of the house is so easy.  I have to walk a grand total of 100 ft to thte barn to grab the stuff, set it up, get in 2-3 flights and pack it back up.  I have a couple places to fly over grass, but they all involve packing the stuff into the car, driving there, etc, etc.

Course, I dont have to rebuild as often when I do that, maybe there's something I shoudl be seeing here, that I'm overlooking.  n~
