I got a small P-51 foamie for Christmas last year.  I haven't flown it yet.  My RC skills have rusted a bit, but I could probably handle it.  My thoughts are to steal it's power train and build a 1/2A stunter.  Has anybody tried this?  I know very little about these planes and wonder if the ESC would accept a cheap timer.

Why not convert the foamy to control line instead then steal the stuff out of it after it gets ratted out from flying. If it uses separate esc and not an all in one board a standard timer should work.

More info, please!

What's the weight of the plane, and is it a 3D stunter or a "zip around fast" scale plane?  What's the capacity of the battery?  Can you share the brand name and model, or is it no-name Chinese?

Maybe post pictures of the inside, the outside, and the box.

I have an old foam Corsair that, in weight and power, is a much closer match to rubber power -- it probably weighs a couple of ounces (I haven't taken it out of the box for years) and it flies on one 200 or 250mAh cell.  You could maybe fly on short lines inside, but I don't think it'd ever stunt.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

This is the victim.  The motor on a 3s could probably swing a 6x3 ok.  No idea what the electrinos likes like. Given the price I probably will have some fun with it RC first.

Thanks - Ken

Just hang the transmitter from your belt and forget about a timer. Crank it up and land whenever you want. Smooth taxie, touch and go, slow flight, lots of fun possibilities.

We run our trainers on rc control all the time. Works great. I even placed at a scale contest using the system instead of a three line throttle setup.

If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before. 🤠
