Foam board 010 to .049 slab wings.
« on: May 22, 2019, 02:11:54 PM »
has anyone used foam board or fan fold for small glow powered airplanes?  I have used it for electric RC but not glow powered control liners.

Especially I want to build a quickie .010 plane for a demo.  Just like a small park flier about 12 inch span.

or a foam slab winged reed valve airplane.

Wonder if foam board can work on slab wing airplanes

The foam slab will work fine on that small a plane.  It might be a bit heavy for the .010, although they are pretty powerful.

The aerodynamics get pretty strange that small, so while it won't do anything awful it may not turn as tight or as well as a bigger plane.
It's got more drag than the same shape in a larger size.

Take a look at this thread:
stunthanger.com/smf/open-forum/testors-series-5000-049-engine-and-airplane-plan/msg405951/#msg405951

Bill Netzeband designed a very decent flying half A stunter from a couple sheets of 1/8in balsa.  It was for the Testor's 049,  which was a pretty handy engine.

Do a search on "Gymnast". It is an indoor, slab wing, flapped electric stunter. It maneuvers just fine on 15 ft lines.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

I have build several from foam and Coroplast. Foam is lighter and has worked well. Coroplast is heavier but makes a built proof trainer. For glow with foam I go with a balsa fuse, for electric all foam.
