Title: fliteline "lil bomb"1/2A c/l
Post by: rudi de causmaecker on May 28, 2012, 02:57:41 AM
Good morning,

Is there someone here who recalls the "lil bomb" from fliteline?
It was a c/l 1/2A flying wing constructed from a massive plank of balsa..
I'm trying to find a drawing with some dimensions on it,to construct one myself;I'm going to teach my kids how to fly c/l
and those "flying wings"are nearly indestructible!!

Greetings,
Rudi. H^^

Minnesotamodeler (Ray Stone) makes something like that as a kit.

Lil Bomb - 18" wingspan      Root cord - 6"      Tip cord - 5"      Root cord was same 6" for about 4" in center  The pieces cut
from wing made fins and as I remember the so called booms were 3/4" square of same thickness as wing... The stab was
about 1-1/2" x 6". There was a 3/32" x 2" x 6" doubler running from l.e. to t.e. in center of wing.  Can not believe that we
sold them retail at $.99 in 1964 but we sold a lot of them.   They would be better if you added tips to extend span to 20" to
24"

Hi Riley,

This is very helpful, thank you very mutch H^^
I think it will be a very fun machine to fly, would a black widow be a good choice,or would it be wiser to go with let's say a medallion perhaps?
It will be used for training purposes mainly(the goal is to learn the kids how to fly c/l)... y1
Thanks again!!
Rudi.

They were designed around the Cox Babe bee, Golden Bee, Blk Widow series engines, but any 1/2A would work..

There's one more thing i need to know,Riley...
How about the balance point?
Maybe on the leading edge?
Were there leading edge fortifications of some sort?

It was very simple sheet balsa construction (one sheet of 3" x 36" for wing)  Remember, it was designed to
sell in a plastic bag for a buck.  CG from 15 to 20% of cord.... Forward for trainer - back to stunt....

I've just found a picture of a Lil bomb-does this one look original to you Riley?
If so,then it will be of great help to build one myself to your spec's..

I hope the picture comes thru this time!

It has been a long time but I think it is very close...If not original it is a close copy! Good luck with your project..............
