I was 'gifted' a NIB Norvel 049. Never built a beam profile 1/2A. Ready to finish a Nobler. Is it beneficial to silk span the whole plane as you would a full size or just clear and then color. Just a sport plane. Still trying to be standing up after a tank of fuel. Just wondering what the normal process is. I have built a couple of 1/2A Ringmasters that I covered just the wings. Thanks in advance.

You could do some dope build ups like normal, sand it smooth, and then dope on colored tissue for something quick and light. Tissue will help fill the grain faster and if you decide to paint it , it won't show, or at least not as bad.

The Norvel will be very different from the Cox engines that you might be used to working with. It's has a tight pinch at the top when brand new and will take some running in to get really good. A small electric starter will be handy here, like the Sullivan Hornet or watch eBay for the Astro-Flight and a couple of other half A starters that are still floating around out there. Lots of information on the Norvel and their operation over in the 1/2A section  of Stunthanger.

For just sport flying try epoxy thinned with denatured alcohol. Two coats with light sanding (400 grit) between. Really fuel proof even with high nitro content fuel and quite glossy. Trim Moneykote and tape for decoration. 🤠

If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before. 🤠

Oops! Sorry.  Somehow cross posted.

What is the ratio of epoxy and denatured alcohol. Thirty minute epoxy? Ed.

I just add a bit of alky then add some more until it is brushing consistency. Never checked the actual ratio. 🙀
