Enlighten me on a couple of Sterling models?
« on: May 25, 2009, 07:50:26 PM »
From time to time I run across a mention or ad for a half
A CL plane that I have no knowledge of.

Sterling "Hornet" Kit S23 span 18" half A engines.
Listed in AAM in 1970 for a mere $2.95 at that time.

Any info would be helpful! Pictures or just simple memories to enlighten me!

Also from the same ad is the "Ringmaster Jr. Flash" 30" span for .09 t0 .19 engines kit S29 $5.95.

The Ring Jr Flash basically is a Jr Ring with a built up fuselage. The wing is the same, and the stab/el either is the same or close. The rudder is more of the P-51 or early Jet style.

By the way, someone could make a Super Jr Ringmaster by bashing this kit just a little. You would remove the  bubble canopy, an substitute a turtle deck, a la the standard Super Ring. Also, change the rudder to the traditional Ringmaster style.

Wow! I have seen neither plane so this is good news. Probably would not be hard to scratch say, a half a version buy doing the same with a Baby Ringmaster. Even a sheet version like the Beginners Ringmaster kit.

Now how about that Hornet? Still hoping there might be a picture coming from someone.

Let's see,
The Hornet was an 18 inch bipe with sheet wings and full fuse built. It was shown with diehedral both for the c/l and f/f version but I think that the instructions did say to remove that if flown as a c/l
The model was not that great, no one that I knew of ever flew one as a f/F I forget the price but $3.50 seems to hang in my faded memory. I have only seen 2 of them show up on the bay. The rarest 1/2A Sterlings for me are the P-47 and the hellcat, both profile/built up wings of about 20 in span. I had both and cannot seem to find them ever on any of the auction sites. Others will say that 1953 Sterling space cadet is the rarest of them all. To each his own.

I think that the rarest of all was the Sterling ready assembled Styrofoam Mustang, came with a Cox .15 engine installed.

Larry,
You might be right but as this is the 1/2A forum I didn't get into anything else. That is not seen too often either nor is the profile P-51 or ME-109 from about 1967/68. I did see those fly and said that they had no future. C/L had beaten them to it. Shows what I know. The P-51 foamy was like the Cox 15 sized model, too much money for the period that they were produced.

Hey, thanks guys! I think I remember the Hornet now. The box art showed it with tons of dihedral and to me it looked just like the popular FF Dakota bipe right? Please say yes... I think Sterling must have stolen that one as the Dakota may have been kitted by someone else. Or maybe published somewhere. The Dakota was a real homebuilt plane and was modeled by others as well.

Actually the Dakota was a kit manufactured by Veco. As I understand it, when Joe Wagner designed it, it used some parts from a CL kit that did not sell well, to recover some of the cost that had been laid out for the CL kit. Joe still sells plans for the original kit...which includes update notes for electric. I think the kit is being made by BMJR.

Another difficult Sterling is the ME-109 for .15. Companion to the P-40. Both profile. Currell
