Title: Custom size fuel tanks
Post by: RK on June 30, 2019, 10:41:50 AM
I am scratch building a 1/2 A racer & have very little room for the tank. Does anyone know of someplace to have one made? It needs to be a rectangle 3/4" H x 3/4" W & long enough to hold 1 oz. Thanks for your help!

That's about 3 1/4 inches long (there's about 1.8 cubic inches per fluid ounce).

Thanks for the quick reply's!  #^ The engine is a 049 Tee Dee, the plane is the "Stiletto" by Richard Laconte. At this point I have two options, make the tank myself or go back to the drawing board. Since I am building for my own enjoyment & I have all ready made a few change's I'll just make it happen with a standard size tank. It will be a little higher & wider than I wanted but I think it will still fly!  :o

Ever try bladder? TD's love running on pressure bladder.  It requires a fine thread NVA though.

Texas Timers has everything.  A plastic tube to contain the bladder is all that is needed.  Fluorescent light safety tubes work pretty good, as do old medicine bottles.

RK,

That is a gorgeous design. I would keep it thin like the original and make up your own tank. If you are uncomfortable bending and soldering, you might try finding a small polyethylene bottle or container that held hotel shampoo or the like. Just use some Goop to hold it together. (I think that is what guys were recommending.)

I've wanted to build that one for a long time....

Hello RK,

  I've had good results using
aluminum cigar tubes assembled
with JB Weld.
   I don't smoke so I don't know
what is available, but they are
close to 3/4" diameter.

I have also had good results
using little party balloons as
non pressurized tanks.
The hard part is finding balloons
close to the right shape and size.

  Balloons can be messy.
The technique is to just have
just one pick up tube and
to fill the "tank" by drawing out
all the air, tipping the syringe so
the fuel is at the bottom then filling
the balloon. When you detach the
syringe the fuel will squirt out
and relieve any pressure that might
affect the needle.

Balloon need to be replaced constantly.
They only last one outing.

Cheers! - K.
