Cox Texaco engine
« on: August 21, 2009, 09:07:06 AM »
I just picked up one of these Cox Texaco .049 engines at a hobby shop.  Yes, it is brand new, in the packaging and all.

My questions:  is the Texaco engine just a standard Cox .049 with a large tank?  I've read that the glow plug with its extra fin is to allow the engine to run cooler and thus swing a larger prop.  Can I use a standard Cox glow plug and a standard 5 or 6 inch prop on this engine?  As far as power or rpms, is the Texaco comparable to a Babe Bee or to a Black Widow?

The Texaco has a very small venturi, possibly even smaller than the original Babe and Golden Bees.  As such, it has astounding fuel economy, but not a lot of power.  Since it doesn't run "hard", and has the extra cooling fin, it can run up to 8" props.  Not what you want for C/L unless you happen to be in a duration event.  Great engine for large but light, floaty R/C models!

Bottom line is yes. It will not hurt the engine...but as Larry said, less power.

The smaller venturi provides better fuel draw at lower RPM's, and the glow plug dissipates heat better because of the extra cooling fins.

I guess I didn't quite answer the question asked.  My recommendation is to trade your Texaco to someone who really needs it for a cherry Black Widow.  Use the classifieds here and, probably on R/C world.  Why screw up a good specialty engine when you can easily get what you really need?

Sure, you could drill the venturi and put on the regular head and run standard size props, but what a waste of a specialty engine that can't be replaced!

Not a bad idea, Larry!  I think the only use I would have for the Texaco engine is to use it to tow a 2 meter glider.  The long run time would fit well with this use, but then again, a black widow will run long enough to get the glider to a good height.

I'm not one to modify any engines, as I'm afraid I would screw things up!

Anyone got a mint condition Black Widow that they want to trade for a new, unused, untouched by human hands, Cox Texaco .049 engine?
