Title: cox td.051&space hopper.049
Post by: rudi de causmaecker on May 25, 2012, 09:46:07 AM
Hi all,
Today,i received my latest ebay finds in the mail;a cox space hopper.049 and a TD.051 N.I.B.!
I'm asking myself how does the space hopper compare to the TD,performance wise?
I'm planning to use the space hopper in a 1/2A c/l stunt "sunspot";a good choice?
Greetings,
Rudi. H^^
P.S.;i tried to upload some pictures, but the system just won't let me...

The Space Hopper was a pretty good engine.  Not quite up to TD standards, which is why it was dropped when the TDs came out.  Also, it would run backwards just like all the other reed engines.  It is quite light!

The Space Hopper has the old three part piston.  I replaced it with a modern piston out of the parts box, and it runs fine.  If you want to experiment, the Space Hopper backplate screws into your TD. %^@

Hi Jim,

A dual carb TD,eh?
Should be interesting n~!!
What would you advise me concerning the space hopper? To fly or not to fly?(that's the question...)
I purchased it to use it in the first place, but now i've read about that three part piston...is it reliable enough to use regularly?
Maybe better to put it on display and use that brandnew T.D.051 i bought on e-bay?
Greetings,
Rudi. D>K

Actually I have two Space Hoppers, one with the replaced piston.  I plan to fly them.  If the three part piston goes, it is easily replaced with a new one.  In one of the Frank Zaic yearbooks there is a drawing and write up about making a half A speed engine out of a TD with a Space Hopper rear end and a tuned pipe.  Interesting to read about anyway.
