where can I get some reeds or some mylar to make some reeds for my golden bee

I use old floppy disks that can be found at thrift shops. Extremely strong and thin. They make a very positive air lock

I've been buying them from Cox International. I think there is a link in the vendors corner. $1.95 for three steel. $2.95 for three mylar. Allow about a week for shipping due to mail and parcel services running a little slower than usual.

Do newer hard drives work? They're getting pretty thin these days...

Thanks for the tip -- I think we have some of those tucked away someplace, with old obsolete god-knows-what on 'em.

I have such a seemingly endless supply, I haven't tried anything else in years! I buy the rebuild kits from ex models or cox international, but I like these reeds the best

Dan,cant wait to try them out .my reedy only gets used once a year .and after a year sitting they wont run as they have deformed sitting all year

Just as a non-modelling aside, the springs from the 3 1/2 inch floppy discs make great trigger return springs for an old Mosin Nagant.

A set of NIB Microsoft DOS 6.22 3.5" floppy disks have been extracted from their envelope after being stored for the last 18 years. They are now nestled in an envelope bearing your name/address and to be dropped in the mailbox first thing in the morning.

Nope. Too much data causes the platters to swell up. Only low density 720 kb floppies work. The 5.25" 360 kb ones are even better!

Huh. I heard about using computer memories to make reeds but mine always caused the engine to run lean and surge. I finally gave up on it and went back to the stainless steel racetrack style. So I have lots of bubble memory chips left over if anyone else wants to try them...

What kind were they? Got a pic? It's all I've been using since at least 2012 that I can remember. And I got more Cox engines than I care to admit. Lol

years ago the Traveling Engine, a Cox 049 went to dozens of states and a goodly number of other countries. Archived are photos of its travels and a lot of history of the areas it visited

Currently we are mailing a TeeDee .010 around the Globe...above Jim Carter currently has the lil jewel

CEF is without debate the nicest forum on the interweb...members are courteous and kind and giving...in all the years I have been member less than 5 have been shown the door

CEF is so much more than just dinky Cox Engines, we have topics for : cars, boats, RC, trains, generators, cars, motorcycles, tape decks, music videos, kites, drop parachute RC action figures, a very wide variety of people and interests

However we all have COX engines in common....

Rusty Knowlton here doing the weekly Stunt Hanger Video call in is a founding member of CEF

We used to have a tach race.....wish we still did...three or four categories of Cox engines mailed to one official who used same prop and fuel....highest RPM per category won a prize

We have an annual PT 19 fly in like Ringmaster round up

There is so much more....even our "off topic" or more adult "redneck zone" is mostly very civil ...yes some few hurt feelings but usually we work it out

Can you tell I like CEF a lot?

Just updating this thread...
So far we've run a half gallon through pretty much 2 Cox golden bees this season. Both have floppy disc reeds. Now, we've also repaired and run others, but the two have many many flights on them. Still running strong.

i had an over size reed set up for my cyclon mouse 1 so made one out of the floppy disk .it worked perfectly .i checked it after we got back from the nats and it was in perfect shape
