Clowning Around - Flight Report
« on: April 13, 2012, 12:16:40 PM »
I finally had a chance to fly my Baby Clown yesterday.  As previously posted, It is a modified Brodak ARC powered by an NV 049 with a custom tank by Fred Krueger.  The prop is an APC 5.5 x 2.5 (same used during break in).  Fuel is Sig Champion 15%.  Lines are .008 x 42' from CL Central.  Handle is a Renger 1/2A unit... awesome! The NV 049 easily hand started and the engine was running a tad rich at launch and broke into a strong two cycle once in the air.  This plane is amazing to fly.  Line tension is the most I have ever felt in a 1/2A.  The engine ran like a jewel and ran consistently right to the end of the tank.  On the first flight I had the push rod in the second hole from the elevator.  It was way too quick on the controls.  I moved it to the bottom hole (DuBro 1/2A horn) and it was spot on for me.  On the last (fourth) flight I did inside and outside consecutive loops, eights and some overhead tests.  We did no take lap times, but it will pull longer lines if necessary.  Clown 2 is in the paint booth and is a close cousin to this one.

Very nice color scheme!  What type and capacity tank are you using?  Uniflo?

I am a big fan of the Baby Clown, I've had 3 of them.  My current one flies with a PAW 061 on 45' lines. Currently with a 6x4 prop.  Photos in a previous thread.  Full pattern, no problem.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Larry, It is a 5/8 ounce uniflow.  A chicken hopper designed and built by Fred Krueger.

Joe,

Sweet lookin' Clown!!  (1/2A is still my favorite)
Glad that tank is working well for you.
BTW, where is your flying field, near Peoria?
I hope to see you fly it this Summer.

Fred,

The location is our Peoria Wyreflyers field along the Illinois River just North of Peoria off Rt 29.  I do plan to fly the September event.... hopefully with better weather this year.

Joe,

It's been a long time since I flew there.  I really liked the site.  A few years ago the Wyreflyers hosted the BEST CL stunt contest of the season.  It was near the end of the season, everyone was at their best, and the judges were consistent and tough (most had been coached by Bill Zimmer).

Joe, great lookin' airplane!! Glad you are having a ball with it, i bet 45 foot lines would be fine for the Norvel.  Fred, i would love to purchase one of those tanks at a full ounce or 1 1/4 oz. size if you feel like making one for sale. My .061's won't make the pattern on anything smaller.  Ray

Ray,

I just ordered a set of 45 foot lines based on my initial flight experience with the plane and your and Larry's comments on line length.  Thanks to all for your comments  H^^

Ray,

Sorry, I really don't have the time right now to build tanks.  I'm trying to build a backup plane for the NATS (I'm finally retired).  I certainly can supply plans, sheet metal layouts and assembly photos for anyone that's interested.

I finally got control of my dizeasle engine on the Clown.  The compression screw would not stay put, and held a great setting until you committed to an official flight, would then go south just after the first maneuver.  Brrp-brrp-brrp at low power for the rest of the flight!  AAARGHHH!!! and this at VSC, having NOT had the problem at home.

I cut the length of the screw down to the minmum and trimmed the cross bar down to just enough.  That didn't do it.  Same problem.

I then tried blue Locktite, and that solved the problem.  Oh joy,oh rapture!  That model now hauls through the whole pattern without a tremor.  I am definitely a fan of this old PAW .061 Ball Bearing engine.  6x4 Rev Up prop and it is turning pretty hith rpm.  I don't know just what, since it gains a lot of revs when it gets in the air.  The only problem is that it takes pliers to adjust the compression.  However the engine is well enough broken in that you only need to tweak it once a day, if that.  It is no great problem to start the engine at the running setting.

One bummer is that sunlight seems to degrade Balsarite.  There is major brown discoloration where the stuff was applied on the upper surface, but the bottom surface is perfectly clear.  Wierd!  Anyone else seen this?

I am not so happy with the model design.  It really needs either more tail moment or larger tail surfaces.  The model is twitchy, without being quite maneuverable enough.  I have tried more forward CG, different control sensitivities, and just can not tune it to my (very competitive) satisfaction.  Hints would be welcome!
