Cox engines parts
« on: May 30, 2024, 09:53:32 AM »
In working with the local kids to build and fly 1/2A planes, I have been assembling all of the miscellaneous parts I have to build complete engines for the kids to use. Since many of them were product engines, I am out of tanks and backplates. So if anyone has any Babe Bee, Golden Bee, etc. style tanks or backplates that you no longer need, we would appreciate it if you could send them. I know that Cox has tanks and backplates, but buying both plus other parts costs a lot when I am building 20 to 30 engines.

Thanks.

PS: You can PM me for mailing address.

Mr. Dave,
I think you may find it more economical.to use external rectangle tanks for your beginner airplanes and new pilots.

I've been following your threads for a bit now,.and am curious about something. Either I missed this early on or you haven't shared yet...
What model are you building in bulk with the kiddies?

Thanks,

We are just finishing up the Skyrays. Setting up another flying day soon (maybe with grilled hotdogs to draw more neighborhood participation). Then the next building project will be a Baby Ringmaster (flat wing). Then after that, will probably build Baby Ringmasters with built-up wings.

When the kids are comfortable with loops and other manoeuvres, plan to try flying combat.

@Dave Nyce:
this is a very cool and engaging endeavor you've taken on!! I'm working on something similar, building "Goldberg Stuntman 23"s for each of my grandkids (their parents to start of course...) I know this can get somewhat expensive if you're buying all the materials too... I've been getting additional Babe Bee's off ebay, if you watch you can find some that get ignored and go cheap (but shipping always adds...), now I know why I can't find any tank/backplates!!

I like the Babe Bee because it's self contained, and mounting to a firewall doesn't require any special work to the plane... Like you I chose the solid wing for training.  I am waiting until after election day to try a "MarWin" trainer, which uses the plastic corrugated board those election signs are made from!

Where will you be flying? will a park allow you to use a field?

Best regards, mike in SC

A neighbor has two lots: one on which his house is built, and a larger undeveloped field next to it. We fly in that field with his permission.

Dave gave me his address and I fired off an order to EXmodel for a tank set. It’s a good cause!

Received a tank/backplate assembly from Mike in SC. Thanks!
Spending this week getting ready for the flying day on Saturday. So will wait until next week to assemble an engine with this new backplate.

I'll bring 12 of my planes for the kids to fly on Saturday, plus the kids' planes. I have to make up a few more line sets.
We're using KastKing braided line, 15LB test, yellow, 35 feet. (Yellow is more visible over grass.)

Using Brodak Fuel, 25% nitro, 11% castor, 11% synthetic.

The kids had a great time yesterday flying at our second Model Airplane Day! They did great, and a few even tried loops (and some, a figure 9). We had grilled hot dogs, chips, and drinks. Some kids have finished building their own planes, and can start building their second one. Others are just starting to build their first plane.

When building planes, the kids learn how the engines work, how to cut wood, use a drill press, sanding, using a screwdriver, pliers, needle nose, wire cutters, and painting.
