cox 049 - without the integral tank

Hi All,
     I have one of the new cox 049's that doesn't have a tank - it's got a massive rear venturi though

Are there any commercially available mounts for this type of engine? It was one of the last engines cox made and was very inexpensive. I just have to refit every front end for this type of engine though.


Any help, web sites etc. would be appreciated.

You can easily remove the choke tube, leaving a flat mounting surface that will fit any standard firewall.  See attachment.

OR, you can cut a huge slot in all your firewall-equipped planes to accommodate the choke tube.  I think Blackhawk Models offers some kits with a split firewall for the unmodified Surestarts.

Yes, Ray we do make some kits that use that engine unaltered and for awhile we offered an adaptor kit to fit it to any of our kits.  Cox did not make these engines Estes made them after they bought Cox and they are not as good as the Cox made engines.   
     Here are some simple options for you:
1- Go to Cox International and buy a tank kit.
2- Cut two pieces of 3/8" x 1/4" maple motor mounts to fit under between the engine and its mount. (Any hard 3/8" material will work).

We stopped making the adaptors because no one wanted them.

I was going to add the hard wood Bracing and I will certianly do that as well as remove the venturi -

If you remove the choke tube you will need shorter screws to connect the backplate to the crankcase. Also, you may want to shorten the shaft on the needle since the choke tube helps support it.

I just use wood standoffs between the backplate and the firewall.

No.  The standard screws work fine, holes are deep enough to accommodate the extra length.   See the attachment in earlier post, the same screws are used in the last pic. 

Shortening the NV shaft is certainly an option although not necessary in my experience.

Oops! You are correct. I tried three engines and they all accommodated the standard screws. Now I'm wondering what I did wrong years ago to make that assumption? Sorry for the mis-information.

One other tidbit...someone had trouble a few years ago because he had used an iron-on covering over the firewall and with the choke tube removed, the covering came loose and was choking the intake. Most CL guys (I think) do not use iron on over the firewall so it should not be a problem.

Thanks for that tid bit about the monokote! That's exactly what I was going to do - I'll paint that part instead

Kids love the shiny monokote look alot

  Notice again my original attachment, note at the bottom: If you cut relief notches in the edge of the venturi it will ensure good breathing. 

I agree, iron-on film isn't the best idea on a firewall.

         I would also like to add a comment. George posted some product engines. The engines in particular that I noticed are what I refer to as the postage stamp backplate. I just called them that for years and its the red one at the bottom. That engine has a needle valve which I believe has the 128 threads per inch. These needles can be used in the Sure Starts. You can press the stock needle out and while its out open that hole to 11/64" I believe. I think you may even be able to go to 3/16". You will achieve a bit more power and a terrific needle to work with. Ken
