Title: Corsair DONE!
Post by: Larry Renger on December 30, 2011, 12:38:46 AM
Well it is ready to fly.  All the paint and stickers are on, and it weighs 8.4 ounces.  It should be satisfactory for Kwikee Stunt.  I plan to convert it to electric for scale flying.

Well the finish renders it "stand way off with the sun in your eyes" scale.  I used the wrong can of dark blue, the translucent candy blue, instead of the solid color.  Thus the blotchy finish.  Shiny, though!  ;D

Very cool Larry, what is that your using for pushrod? It looks to me like a very small carbon tube with music wire ends. Ken

Yes, carbon tube with wire ends is my standard rod.

I am building a 1/2A DO335.  I am not happy with my push rod.  Tell me more about yours.  Size (ID & OD) of carbon tube, and size and attachment methoid of the wire ends.

Plans?  Right inside the BlackHawk Models kit box! Act fast, he is discontinuing this model, unless demand picks up.  Even if Larry Rice has quit making the kit, I suspect he can still sell you the plans.  Larry lurks on this forum, so perhaps we will get word from on high.

Pushrod is the smallest carbon tube you can find to fit 2x56 pushrod ends.  You just have to check all the sources to see what is available.  I pick up stuff wherever I find it and then haven't a clue where it came from when I use it.  (Most modern hobby shops are pitiful compared to MY workshop!)  :##  VD~  S?P  My philosiphy with materials like that is "When in doubt, buy it!"

An altenative is to get 1/16" carbon rod and join it to the purshrod ends with a length of aluminum tube over the joint.   JB Weld is the glue of choice.  I always make my pushrod length adjustable so that I can tweak the trim to match inside and outside maneuvers.  By biasing the bellcrank, you can make one or the other more sensitive, then reset the handle to neutral.

I am a great believer in 3" bellcranks and longer horns on 1/2A models and 4" on larger ones.  Bill Netzband actually calculated the "Netzband Wall" where a small bellcrank can no longer provide the force to drive the elevator adequately.  In addition, you have a hard time desensitizing a model to be competitively, precisely, stuntable with a 2" bellcrank.  Adjustments just become too critical when you have such small dimensions to deal with.  All you have heard about 1/2 A models are "squirrely" is due to bad trim and lousy control setup.  I can trim a full stunt 1/2A so you can only fly level, no capability for stunts. Then as you increase the control throw and move the cg back you can tune it anywhere you want.
