I've always loved the look of elliptical wings.  Just hate the geometry of it, and respectively unique ribs.  Foam to the rescue!

Jim, that is a nice looking plane.

I went on the AMA archives and read the article. I like the 4" bellcrank. Do you still have the version with the built-up tail section?

I tend to build a little heavy so I would probably opt for the Tee Dee .09, or at least an .06.

As George said, the article is available on the AMA website.  The fuselage was built in two pieces because the wing is so thick.  The wing was built, covered, etc. and the front end glued on, then the rear end. the top was either sheeted or planked.  Today, I would mold a top.  The plans were drawn by Frank Beatty and are a work of art. 

The first one was crashed due to a line break.  The wing and flaps survived (suggests that the wing is overbuilt).  I still have the second one. Unfortunately, I painted it with unplasticized Aerogloss and it needs a complete recover job.  Wingspan is 36 in, weight around 11 -12 oz.  TD 049 on pressure.  Flew it on 42 ft 008 lines.  I don't fly hourglasses very well, but I flew a 40-pointer with the first airplane.  Of course, I was alone at the field at the time.

I downloaded your article.  Most bodacious, dude!  n~  You know, Eric Rule might be interested in kitting this puppy.  With laser cutting, the varied ribs are NO problem.  Tell him I sent you.  =)

It has more or less a P-40 tail.  Change the tail shape and it would be pretty Spitfire like. If you blew it up 1 1/3 you would have a 48 in span airplane about right for a modern 25 or a Fox 35.  1 1/2 would give 54 in span for a 40 or 46.  Do a little revamping on the nose to fit the engine and get the CG in the right place, web the spars and maybe change a few wood thicknesses.

Hi Jim,
After a bit of a marathon, I finally got the plans. I built it pretty light, just over 10oz and it flies far better than I can. Wasp 0.61 for powera 45 feet lines and just enjoy!

This is a fuzzy photo of a photo of the second in the series leading to the Cheap Thrill.  The first one was similar to this one.  I flew both those airplanes in a number of 1/2A stunt contests.  I don't have a picture of #3, but still have my pencil plans.  It is, appropriately intermediate in appearance between #2 and the Cheap Thrill.  It flew very well, but I don't recall if I ever competed with it.
