Cavacraft Newport 17 WW1 Bipe
« on: May 29, 2008, 02:44:00 PM »
Since had no takers on this for sale I'll build it. Hollow log 1/2A powered. Really nice kit. All wood except for decent plastic cowl. No foil cowl. Plain old Babe Bee in nose as per plan. Have a Cox mini collection, but no bipes. On a different note have a Sterling Folker D V11 coming, plus have a Newport 28. Box of fine Greenie K&B .35's. Should be fun. I will do some major wood replacement and changing structure. Hopefully get decent flyer's from both. Just like those WW1 fighters.
Cheers,Dan

Hey Dan,

The Nieuport 28 turns out to be a pretty good looking plane, I built one back in the late 70's with a Stallion .35.
I sure wish I had replaced some of the wood, the tail feathers were pretty heavy and iIended up sticking a couple oz of lead inside that nice spun aluminum cowling.

Had a hard time getting it started for the maiden flight, removed the cowl to check things out- cleaned some gunk from the fuel line and it fired up. Had my buddy hold it and I ran to the handle. He released it and it took about 1 second to realize that without the cowl and the lead stuck inside it I had 1 very tail heavy sucker on the end of the lines. Back then i had never seen a Sabre Dance or a Bi-Slob fly - but that is what I did for about 10 seconds before it did a backflip into the pavement from about 6 feet. Oh well- at least I have 1 picture of it in my scrapbook.

Bill,
Ouch!! on the Newport. Alot of work to end up like that. Both the Newport/ Fokker DV11 have a shaped airfoil. I have a decent amount of good wood and will do a major replacement. With carbon fibre they should hold up. Now to find some William's Wheels. Never ending battle. The Fokker has plastic cowl which I'm not happy with but it does have medal grill. Maybe find a pressed one or make a copy from wood. The Newport 17 will be a hanger queen.
Cheers,Dan

Dankar, Williams Bros. is back in business! They are now sold to a gent in Texas, do a Google search on Williams Brothers. Call him on the phone. Nice gent!

Prices have gone up slightly, but not badly. There is an online catalog, as you will see.

I was sooooo happy to find them up and running so fast. (I needed wheels for 2 more Gee Bee projects!)
