Title: AVENGER IN THE WORK SHOP (NEW PICS)
Post by: LARRY RICE on June 20, 2010, 04:15:57 PM
We are finishing up a new Avenger kit, it is drying now and will be finished next week.  I expect to have it available before the 4Th of July.  Designed by Paul E. Del Gatto for Scientific models in the late 50's.  Hollow log, 18" span with vac. canopy, guns and antenna optional.  This one has a flat wing but the ones in the kits will have an airfoiled wing.  The model builds easy but the designing to be able to kit it was time consuming.
Just thought I would show you what we are working on. I will update when it is finished.

Looks great.  Too bad it is not 36 inch wing for my McCoy 60 Redhead with Bill Johnson throttle.   H^^

Are you saying a twin Avenger (F-82 style) with a .60 on it ... Hummm sounds interesting.  LL~
Doc, I have been looking at all of the pictures from Brodak's and I was wondering why so many people were building their models up side down ... with the canopy on the bottom and the wheels up in the air?  LL~

Larry- that is a great looking model!  I will be getting one- even though I have plenty of other projects. I have a nice rebuilt Babe Bee that will look great in that cowl!

No Larry, thinking of a Class II or I carrier kit.  As far as all the planes built inverted, that is one of the things that Elwyn does best.  He sent me a pic of my Staggering and with the clear sky I had it hung upside down for a long time until someone pointed out the little cloud under the landing gear. Just jerking your chain, Doc.
I have this great looking plan for a Dauntless for carrier but it requires planking.  I know that planking is easy to do but the general public goes screaming out of the room at the thought of it.  So I guess that will not work out.

Could do it like the Berkeley Gaurdian.  The formers were six sided with planks glued on.  Then it was sand and carve to get the shape.   H^^

Thanks, Doc.
Here is how to do 1/2A carrier.  Install an arresting hook in the down position with enough flex to allow the tail to sit down for takeoff.  Attach a string to the tail, so that it can be pulled by the pilot.  Take off, fly fast for time then pull the tail inward while lifting the nose of the plane, this will slow the model. Finish the slow timing and go for an arrested landing.  With practice it is easy.

Sound like how the WAM group used to do it according to what I read way back then.  Won't let us use it in AMA compitition. H^^
