Title: AP Wasp .061 on sale again.
Post by: Bill Adair on December 17, 2010, 03:16:44 PM
Hobby People has the AP Wasp on sale again, and this is probably the lowest price we will ever see.

They are only on sale for the weekend, if I read the ad correctly. $33.99 each!

Thanks, but I found it and placed an order.  I don't EVER want to run out of these engines!   :X

Larry , I have replaced the worn out original glow plug with a Merlin plug on my Wasp .061. Now I can't keep it running when I pull the battery , is the Merlin what you use ?

I would say more nitro or a hotter plug.  Now we wait for the correct answer. H^^

Bill,
Is the plug new?

If it is a used plug and more nitro doesn't fix it, try a new plug.

Plugs can get contamination on them that inhibits the catalytic reaction between the platinum in the plug element and the alcohol in the fuel. Depending on the amount of contamination it can cause the engine to slow down or quit when the booster is removed. Worst case is when it will only run with the booster attached.

More than likely, John's fix is correct.  H^^

It's a brand new plug , infact it's the second one I put in . Nitro is about  23% as I am mixing 10% with 30% nitro , oil is castor/synthetic blend at 22%. Maybe keep changing plugs , the Merlin plugs are less expensive than the original AP plug  .

Bill , this maybe should be in engine set-up and tips. Anyway , my input is , i have been using the Merlin plugs for a while now in 5 or 6 engines and they are as good or better than originals. I would guess something else is going on if you have trouble with more than 1 of them. I had some 35% Norvel fuel one time that fried Galbreath plugs till i just dumped it.

I run Merlin plugs with 1 extra head gasket on 10%nitro fuel.  Generally fly with an APC 5.5x2.5 prop and get about 20K on the ground. Performance is excellent.  What size prop are you using?

I would look for air leaks - venturi, backplate, under the cylinder, non flat plug mating surface.  If none of those are a problem, pull the engine apart and check the fits.  How new is the engine?  It may be tight.  If well used and some dirt got in, it could be shot that way.

I ordered one and it says shipped. I did find a couple new Norvel's so I just ordered one AP .061. $33.95 is hard to beat. What I look foward to is the Paw .061 Diesel. I have a friend who lives close to Carlson's and maybe get a gallon of fuel.

I just got mine  #^  Eric Rule at RSM has them in stock, along with the Holuszko venturi.  If you fly 1cc stunt, that is THE combo to have!
