Title: Another flight report...DoubleDee Rumbler
Post by: minnesotamodeler on July 14, 2008, 07:10:55 PM
As well as Otto the Jr. Gyro (see previous flight report) I took out the newest iteration of the DoubleDee (AKA Droopy Diamond) Rumbler.  Pictures below.  I've now built 3 of these with the "special" airfoil, each one a little more extreme--that is, committed to the Droop principle.  I think I'll stop here; the rib spacing is as wide as I want to go.

Flight characteristics are fantastic...really more than my old reflexes can keep up with. I have to carefully plan my maneuvers beforehand so as to avoid that nanosecond of indecision ("Which way to turn?") since the slightest hesitation will put this thing in the turf.  It snaps around loops, as many as you want, looks like about 6 feet in diameter (I know they're bigger than that, don't jump on me, but that's the perception since it gets around so fast); but smooth, very stable like it's sitting on a (very fast) rail.  Flying it is a real rush. Norvel .061 powered, 5x4 prop, bladder pressure tank. Weight of all 3 vary between 5-6 oz. RTF. I love it!  Think I'm about ready to issue it in a kit. Check out the profile...

Ray, Looks great, but I gotta ask you,:
Are you sure that those are ribs? Reminds me of the '58 Plymouth Fury fins. Huge things!

I like it and if I build one I think I'll call her "Christine". ~^ Heh!

All kidding aside it looks like a good plane worthy of being kitted.

Keep up the good work, Robert

Again, I told you so!!   n~

Just for my curiosity, how's the glide on it Ray.  It was always my experience that the diamond foil seemed to generate alot of lift.

John, it glides very well, at least equal to the standard airfoiled Rumbler.  I think it would probably do a complete loop after the engine dies although I haven't done more than a half-one recovering from an incomplete maneuver deadstick.  No difficulty at all, I don't even worry about when the end of the tank may come, just keep maneuvering 'til it runs out. If I haven't thanked you for first introducing the concept, let me do so now! *Thank you.*
