One day back in the early 50’s, I don’t recall the exact year, my Dad came in and asked how I would like a flying model. You can guess the answer. I had built, with some help, some solids. These were the old Strombecker Kits, carved from Pine.
At the Hobby Shop we selected a Scientific American Boy and Anderson Spitzy .045. The original is of course long gone, but a few years ago I built another one for a Grandson. It flew for a while with a COX and recently I brought it out of retirement and mounted a Spitzy. Haven’t flown this motor yet but the original had plenty of power. It will likely need some nose weight since the Spitzy is lighter and shorter.

I have a replica American Boy with a Space Bug on it. Wow is it FAST!

Yes it is fast. I have a slightly enlarged one that I fly electric. It is a much better trainer. No wonder I crashed the first time back in the 50's

I discovered I have a compete kit on the shelf. Flew several American Boy planes back when I didn't know any better. Also learned to loop one of them. Dad was laid up in bed at the time because of back surgury and I flew out side the bed room window so he could see. I can still hear him as I completed that first loop. By the way power was an OK Cub .049A.

HI John,
I can share your joy a little bit about redoing your "first" C/L model. I just got a kit not too long ago of the Scientific "King Cobra", and it is definitely on the build list!
Nice job on yours. ;D
